Seledka Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Hi, everybody ! I've got a $100 Bass Pro Gift card for my birthday. And I'd like to buy Rod and Reel for Largemouth Bass fishing. What best I can get from Bass Pro for $100 ? What do you think about this combo ? http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Tourney-Special-Spinning-Combo-7-Medium-Power/product/1408280630271/#desc-tab Thank you all ! Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted April 23, 2015 Super User Posted April 23, 2015 Hey welcome to the forums. You might want to head over to the introduction section to introduce yourself. To answer your question, you might want to build your own combo. The new tourney special rods are not as good as the old ones and they have the hook hanger positioned in a kind of crappy position as it'll catch the line every so often. I'd probably suggest either a Berkley Lightning rod or Berkley Lightning Shock. The models are going to depend on what you fish with the most and what you're comfortable with. I'd probably suggest you pair it up with a Pflueger President reel. That will put you right around the $100 mark and get you set up fairly well. 1 Quote
Jtrout Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 I've owned 3 newer tourney specials a mh and two M. They are good for the price and hold up well but as WIguide said the hook keepers are in the worst spot catches line a lot I finally took it off my mh rod. Quote
bigturtle Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 I would not recommend that combo at all.Instead, I would recommend you to get Shimano Sienna FD reel ($30), in whatever size you find appropriate, and either the new or old Basspro Bionic Blade rod when it is on sale($60-70). The difference between the new and old bionic blade rods are just the handle. Basspro has sale on their rods fairly frequently, and if you cant wait for a discount, then get the Berkley Lightning Shock or the Ugly Stik Elite. Personally I would choose the Ugly Stik for its durability, because I find the difference in sensitivity between those 2 rods to be negligible. Ugly Stik also offers more options for their rods. Super User smalljaw67 Posted April 24, 2015 Super User Posted April 24, 2015 Follow WIGuide's advise, that would be the best bang for buck you will get. 1 Quote
C0lt Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 this might be an unpopular decision, but I feel that you can't beat the abu garcia vengeance combo, 7ft medium fast action, for the money. Cost 79.99 retail (I may like it a little more because I get them through work for 59.99), but Ive had it for a few weeks now and im very impressed. however, I do feel that building your own rod would be the best option. especially if you can find an extra 20 or 30 dollars to go on top of that gift card. Mccallister25 Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Not sure on the Tourney Special rods, but the TS reels are garbage.. Iv made the mistake of owning two. If it were me, Id use the gift card on a BPS Pro Qualifier reel, and put an extra 40 bucks on a Berkley Lightning rod. 1 Quote
livemusic Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I bought a Pfleuger President 6940 reel for $60 and a Berkley Lightning Rod Shock 7' Med for $40 from Walmart. That rod is $50 at BPS. I like the combo. I recall that the Shock rod is supposedly designed for Superline braid, which is what I have on it. Quote
Mccallister25 Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 I bought a Pfleuger President... Can't go wrong with the President for a budget reel. It was the first reel I ever owned. Absolutely loved that thing. Wish I had another. Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted April 29, 2015 Super User Posted April 29, 2015 The Tourney Special rods feel terrible in hand. Do yourself a favour and don't buy them. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted April 29, 2015 Super User Posted April 29, 2015 If you have a gift card for BPS and want a decent rod and reel this combo is not to bad.... http://www.basspro.com/PENN-Battle-II-Inshore-Rod-and-Reel-Spinning-Combo/product/14062009562415/ Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 29, 2015 Super User Posted April 29, 2015 The Tourney Special rods feel terrible in hand. Do yourself a favour and don't buy them. I have a 7' med Tourney, I bought it for bonita and have used it for snakeheads. The rod has good backbone for an inexpensive rod, as a bass rod it does feel a little awkward. I'd probably give mine away to a local, I'm not shipping, lol. Even for budget priced gear I'd be putting the emphasis on the rod, I'd have no problem with a trion on a little nicer rod. Quote
Trevor1972 Posted August 15, 2021 Posted August 15, 2021 I'm looking for a couple Bass pro Tourney special spinning rods. Not the newest ones but the one before that with the little bit darker Greek and more black. Looking for a Medium light. 5'6" and a Medium at least 6' Quote
