coltsbuff Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Just wondering if reel was too big for rod? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 23, 2015 Global Moderator Posted April 23, 2015 IMO, yes. You'd be much better off with a 1000 size on that rod. 1 Quote
coltsbuff Posted April 23, 2015 Author Posted April 23, 2015 What are the disadvantages of having too large reel for pole? Quote
camman Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Rod/reel is not balanced properly...for me when this happens it makes it more difficult to detect bites Quote
jbw252 Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Too large of a reel makes your combo butt heavy. Too light makes it tip heavy. This affects your casting & rod tip sensitivity in feeling a fish strike. It also affects your comfort, because you have to compensate for the unbalanced rod & reel. The best way to judge, is to physically put together your combo and feel it for yourself. Take a rod or reel that you own, and try them out in the store where you plan to buy the companion reel or rod. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted April 23, 2015 Super User Posted April 23, 2015 Chances are the stripper guide on the rod will be too small for a spool of that size. This can affect casting distance. 1 Quote
coltsbuff Posted April 23, 2015 Author Posted April 23, 2015 So in other words. If it feels right I'm good. Quote

Super User WIGuide Posted April 23, 2015 Super User Posted April 23, 2015 It's probably a bit too big for that rod. I'd have a 1000 series or smaller on it. Quote

jbw252 Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Again, this topic is very subjective. I agree with some of the other posts, that you should go with a smaller reel. But ultimately, it's up to you. Quote
The Great Blue Heron Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Also, if it looks bad, it's also no good. Feeling good is only 40% of the equation. Go with the 1000 or get a larger rod. Quote
coltsbuff Posted April 25, 2015 Author Posted April 25, 2015 I ended up putting it on a 6' ugly stick with medium action. Is there any poles out there that feel like ultra lite w medium action? Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted April 25, 2015 Super User Posted April 25, 2015 St. Croix has about any rod action you could imagine.. 1 Quote
Capt.Bob Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 I would go with the 1000, whether it will work or not isn't relevant, the fact is the 1000 will work better,,,,,,,on that particular rod. I have seen guys put casting reels on spinning rods,, they worked and were able to fish with them, but hardly worked anyting like they were intended for and not at all desirable. They are both good choices, they just aren't built to work together. I agree there is a St. Croix for any budget that will excel in that particular price range!! Quote
The Great Blue Heron Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 ST Croix Premier Spinning 6'6" Medium-Light Fast Action. Lure weight 1/8 oz to 1/2 oz, line weight rating 4-10lbs. Should pair well with a 2500. Model number PS66MLF. For around $125, it's a no frills workhorse of a rod. What some may call a meat rod. Quote
