Lacustrine Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I went fishing today and used primarily spinnerbaits for the first time. I had a lot of bass following the lure, but only caught one. I tried 3 sizes different speeds, 2 different colors, tried fishing it like a jig, letting it fall when the bass is chasing it, twitching the lure, but very few wanted to commit. What could I do different? My buddy was catching them pretty good with a jerk bait and worms. The water temp was 70 and was visible for 10 feet deep. Any suggestions? Quote
Lacustrine Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 Did you try adding a trailer? No. Will that help? Quote
Lacustrine Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 Try jerkbait and worms. I did end up switching, but I have heard so much about spinnerbaits, especially at this time of year. Quote
Heron Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Understood, but alas, you still just have to follow what the fish are responding to. If theyre not feeling a spinnerbait, then theyre not feelin it. There may not be anything that you can do differently with it, on that particular day. Theyll like them better on another day. Quote
danno054 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 No. Will that help? Possibly, it's just another option. To me if I'm getting a lot of fish that will follow and won't commit it usually turns out to be a color situation. 1 Quote

A trailer was included with the Mann's I just bought. I mainly used War Eagles though and did not see them. Quote
danno054 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 There's a good thread on spinnerbait trailers! Check it out, I just learned something there! Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I don't get bit a whole lot fishing spinnerbaits in open water on a steady retrieve unless it's pretty windy. My best bet is to bang them off of cover. One thing I like to do is give the rod complete slack during the retrieve. This causes the spinnerbait to drop straight down instead of gliding down at an angle like when you just stop reeling. I don't hold the rod tip straight in front of me but more to the side. I usually keep the spinnerbait pretty close to the surface also. While burning it I I'll abruptly stop reeling and quickly move the rod tip towards the bait giving it complete slack then pull it back tight after it fell straight down 6 inches or so. I'll do it a few times during a retrieve. It gets them to react a lot better than a stop and go just with your reel. Quote

Today it was forecasted 4mph winds, but the water was white capping. It was not windy in a creek entrance we fished though. Quote

I only used white/chart with gold/silver Indiana/Colorado and white with silver willow/colorado. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted April 23, 2015 Super User Posted April 23, 2015 Use down sized willow blades, make a longer cast and BURN THAT THING as Fast as you can , . . . . . and hold on ! No trailer but definitely use a trailer hook. A-Jay Quote

This is not so. i am not calling you out so don't take it that way. But if bass are following the bait they are interested in it but something is wrong. I have changed blades and that was the trick.Could be color or the retrieve. Quote

Do you think a War Eagle finesse would work just as good? i tried to go fast, but with a medium micro magic it was a challenge. Quote

Or check out the Strike King Burner model spinner bait - It's made to be presented in just that manner - Not the answer to everything but sometimes it really turns them on. When it does, it's a bit of work but a Ton of Fun . . . A-Jay Quote

danno054 Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Nothing wrong with that, I just wanted to make sure you didn't have like a 5.4:1 or something. When you get a second rod and reel you might consider a 7.1:1 or something in that ballpark. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted April 23, 2015 Super User Posted April 23, 2015 Anytime bass are following your lures or missing top waters .... then you are close to catching them. Last week I had bass missing a floating minnow , they were missing it on purpose. A switch to a small buzzbait was all it took to start catching them . 1 Quote
wuchr20 Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 I would try and add a little jerk to it. Or u probably need to change the color or size of bait. Quote
