The whole swimbait thing was getting pretty tired, so i decided i would try something new.

Crankbaits.

These are much trickier to make and after making this one, much respect goes out to the crankbait gurus.

Just about everything about this bait could use improvement, but i did test this and it has a nice waking action with a crazy wide wobble. i also like the way the rattle sounds (the rattle can be seen in the photos, its a faint circle just behind the gill). i know this bait will catch some fish :(

anyway, here are the photos:

this one really brings out the gold:

Looks like a killer little wake bait.   What did you use to make the rattle?   Get you some dry wall putty and you can dress the hole so it won't show.    I think you did a great job for your first crankbait.

The white bottom is excellent and the color scheme outstanding.

Did you consider adding any "orange" to the bait or more "red" to the gills?

What about better eyes?  Would that be too much of a problem to add lazer eyes or more realistic eyes?

How long is the bait? It looks the size of a Mann's Minus One, which is perfect for a wake bait.

You have one rattle in it.  Ever consider putting two smaller rattles inside in place of the large one?

Just food for thought.

Overall, the bait looks outstanding.  Good job.  :(

thanks guys.

Big M,

to make the rattle i drilled a hole across the bait and put in this little brass bead thing that holds a guitar string onto the bridge (i was going to use a copper BB, but just fooling around i tossed this guitar string bead in there, and it sounded better than the BB). then i sealed off both sides of the hole with pieces of aluminum from a soda can.

my original plan was to cut the edge of the hole at a slant so that the aluminum would be "sunk in" the bait, and then just smooth it over with epoxy, but that wasnt working out so i just cut the aluminum bigger than the hole and glued it over the entire hole.

Sam,

these are all very good points, and i actually considered each one of these while i was making the bait.

i thought about running a blood trail across the sides of the bait, but i figured it wasnt all that necessary, and i like the way the paint looks without additional details. i am a big supporter of the simple=better theory. dont want to have too much going on on the bait at once.

i made some 3D eyes for it, but i was pretty stupid and didnt think it through and forgot to cut recessed eye sockets, and when i went to put the eyes on, they stuck out so far it was ridiculous, so i just painted them on. if i had some sticker prismatic eyes, i definitley would have used them, but i didnt have any...

i didn't measure the bait but its about 2.5-3" long. its a little bit bigger than the usual wakebait of this style.

i knew from the start i only wanted one rattle in it. i've had very good success with crankbaits that only have a faint, high pitched ticking rattle, like the rapala DT's. this rattle, with its single brass bead, has a nice sound i really like.

Dave,

listen carefully,

you need to find a girlfriend!

Girls are much more fun to play with than your dremel.

Dave does not need a girlfriend.

He needs to save his money for fishing stuff.

Girlfriends will come along later in high school and college and when he starts his career.

No hurry to get a girlfriend.  All she will do is take your money and stymie your fishing.  :(
