Green Trout Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I live in Louisiana where in the morning in the river I fish in the summer, the water temperature is about 83 degrees. I typically catch bass shallow on the banks in 1-5 feet for the first couple of hours in the morning while the water temperature is cooler. My question is would 3/8 oz jig work in this situation? I have cypress trees and stumps along the bank. I have heard of jigs deep in cold water but I want to know if they work shallow in warm water. What have you found with this? Thanks! Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I wouldn't hesitate at all to throw a jig there, but if I was aware of the conditions ahead of time I'd probably have a weightless plastic, squarebill and/or top water tied on. Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Green Trout, you just said you typically catch fish in those spots. You use a texas rig a lot, right? What makes you think a jig couldn't work? The truth is just about every bait could work in that situation. You just have to find out which one will work for you at any given time. There are no set rules. Just use a little common sense and go with your gut. You'll find out what works for you, and you'll develop your own style in the process. Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 Jigs work 24/7, all year round. Summer mornings are no exception. 1 Quote
Blues19 Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I would be throwing the jig, along with a T Rig, maybe a frog and a spinnerbait. Sounds like a great scenario to fish 1 Quote
aprilbass101 Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Jigs all year around! The only concern would be the current of the river. Would 3/8oz be heavy enough to structure fish? Unless your fishing points, holes, & eddies! 3/8oz jigs would work perfect with a trailer! You might have to bump up to 1/2oz to 3/4oz depending on the current! Good luck Quote
Green Trout Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 Thank you! And the current is not too strong so 3/8 should work well. Thanks! Quote
riverbasser13 Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Man that sounds like jig territory to me, go for it. Quote
MemphisFF Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I was watching MLF and that's what Hackney was throwing first thing around the cypress trees at Caddo lake..he recommended dark colors in the morning low light situations.. 1 Quote
FlipSide Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I would have a jig, t-rig, squarebill all tied on in that situation Quote
SwampLife Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I live in louisiana and fish they same type of stuff you mentioned.. I have better luck with 1/4 ounce jig with a trailer..unless wind, and current I will go 3/8 or 1/2 Quote
Super User Sam Posted April 22, 2015 Super User Posted April 22, 2015 Yep. In cypress trees. Just be ready to lose a few to the knees. 1 Quote
Kyle46N Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 And if the bass are in shallow, most likely they are active for those first few morning hours. So I would think about swimming that jig too. Quote

Siebert Outdoors Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Sounds like a great spot to throw a jig. I'd start with a 3/8 also. Quote
kingmotorboat Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Sounds like a great spot to throw a jig. I'd start with a 3/8 also. I only use a 3/8 ounce jig now. You're Okeechobee craw dredge brush jig has been my most productive lure this year Quote
Nolan Hunter Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Like said time and time again jig is always a got to in this situation... But I would love to throw a square bill and bounce it off the cypress and check out what happens. Quote
