Fisherman03 Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I purchased a St Croix Avid 6'6 med fast action and was wondering which reel would fit it better the supreme XT or the Saros in your guys opinions? And what size of the reel should I get? Quote
Super User Darren. Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 Take your pick! I'm a Shimano guy so that's my choice. I got my hands on all the brands while at Bass Pro on several occasions. The Shimanos just felt better in my hands over the Pfluegers, Quantums, et al. So it's a personal decision for which you'll get a bevy of answers on each side. Best advice is go to the store and feel each one on your rod. Which one do YOU think feels best? Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 i love my pflueger spinning reels. dont have the XT but i do have the supreme mgx. and a trion. both have been great reels and the quality shows in their performance. my next reel is going to probably be a president as they get great reviews and have an excellent price... i say go with the pflueger, their reputation for spinning reels is tops right now imo... Super User F14A-B Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 Either.. Both those reels will be excellent, both reels will have a different feel though, a 2500 or a 30 size should be just about perfect.. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 This is a tuff one. Both are great reels. I have the Supreme but not the Saros. I do, however, have 2 older Shimano Stradics. I have never had an issue with either of the Stradics and Supreme is an awesome reel. The only down side to the Supreme is that, in hand, it feels like a cheaper reel but this does not effect the performance. I would put both on a rod and see which one balances best for you. Quote
Mike2841 Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I had both, kept the xt, but you really can't go wrong with either. The reason I kept the pfluger over the shimano is that I don't really like the bails on shimano reels, they seem thin and flimsy to me, just a weird personal opinion. Quote
Fisherman03 Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 How much bigger is the Saros 3000 compared to the 2500? Quote
Mike2841 Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 How much bigger is the Saros 3000 compared to the 2500? Same physical size but the 3000 has a deeper spool so it holds more line, the 3000 also has a T handle Quote
Fisherman03 Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 Oh I might go with the 2500 then I don't like the t handles Quote

Super User Master Bait'r Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 I'd go with the Supreme XT. Love mine. That's not to say the Saros isn't a great reel though! I don't think you can make a bad choice given the options. Quote
Super User webertime Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 Just note that the new Saros have a short "neck" (piece from reel foot to reel body). If you have larger hands you could run into clearance issues with the bail/rotor hitting your hand. I have huge hands and it happened. That being said I'd still take the Shimano over the Pflueger (I've owned both)... The Pflueger seems to get sloppy/worn out feeling after a year or so. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 I own the Saros, and my Dad owns the Supreme, so I have used both. I personally prefer the Saros a good bit more than the Supreme. Both are fine reels, but I just really enjoy the Saros. Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 22, 2015 Super User Posted April 22, 2015 I like a t knob, if the saros 3000 has the same septon knob as my stradics the grip is excellent. It can wear out, I've replaced them on each of my stradics, I don't find that to be a negative issue. I've had quite a few bail troubles on a number of Shimano reels, a decent reel so just a matter of repairing them. The Pfluegers have a paddle style knob, they go get slick and I have replaced them on all 3 of mine 2 times so far. The handle on either reel does not affect performance, it's about comfort for me. If I were to make a choice, it would be the one I could get the best deal on. Quote
