Can anyone make a list of what they would consider "search baits"?

whatever you have tied on that youre using to cover water in search of fish. Once you think youre on them, you may stop searching and tie on a slower, more focused bait, such as a jig.

Spinnerbaits

Crankbaits

Buzzbaits

Chatterbaits

Spook

Swim jig

Swimbait is the mother of all search baits.

i dont believe in this search bait thing. throw what you think is going to work based on the conditions, throw something you have confidence in, throw something you think is pretty. theres not one magic bait thats going to find that first fish or two for you. you could end up wasting time throwing a bait the fish dont want, because someone convinced you there was a such thing as a search bait thats going to find the fish for you. and you can cover all the water you want, doesnt mean the fish are going to bite this so called search bait, means youve wasted that much more time. you couldve been fishing something more productive and trying to put together a pattern based on conditions, or you can keep chucking that search bait that apparently isnt part of the available pattern(s) for that given day...

I disagree with this. There are certain times when a search bait will tell you a whole lot about what's going on underneath the water. With a moving bait, you can cover a lot more water and not only search for fish but structure changes and cover as well. All in about a tenth of the time it would take you to probe the whole thing with a shakey head etc. Even if they don't commit to what you are throwing, a lot of times you can get boils or get them to swipe at it.

This is especially true when the water is a bit colder and a lot of fish will bunch up in certain parts of the lake. You can go where you think they will be, and you might be right, but you're going to save a lot of time if you were wrong and probably learn more about the body of water with a search bait. With every new body of water I go to, I always start with a search bait.

Lipless Crankbait

Squarebill Crankbait

Caronlina Rig or Texas Rig if you work them quickly

Spinnerbait

swimbait

Topwater frog or buzzbait

My favorite search bait overall is the lipless crankbait. I have caught the most fish on that bait and never seem to get skunked throwing one.

The bigger the better. You want to know where the fish are a swimbait will definitely clue you in.
