RustyNails87 Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Hi everyone, I am looking to get off the shoreline and start fishing ON the water! I would like something that I can fit in the back of my SUV to bring from spot to spot. I'm not sure a kayak will fit in the back of my SUV and a float tube I'm not really sure about because I fish very shallow waters sometimes and having my feet in water kind of gives me the heebie-jeebies! What kind of ride could I get that will fit and be very portable? I should probably mention that I am almost 300lbs and VERY concerned about stability! Thanks Quote
Jim Mac Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 It's hard to say without knowing how much room you have in the SUV. Do the seats fold down? Any other info you can provide? Quote
RustyNails87 Posted April 20, 2015 Author Posted April 20, 2015 It's a Honda Pilot and yes the rear seats fold down. Quote
bassinOUT89 Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Look into the Sun dolphin sportsman. It's an 8 footer. Should fit in there if you're able to bungee tie the trunk. Quote

Super User Darren. Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 If concerned about stability, are you meaning you want to stand, or just want a yak that isn't tipsy when you sit in it? Are you tall for that 300 pounds? Regardless of your height, something stable and not tipsy will mean a wider yak. Something like a Native Ultimate 12 FX, a Feel Free Lure 11.5, etc. Wilderness Systems Ride, etc. Quote

GADawgs Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 You can also put something up on the roof and expand you options. Jackson kayak Big Rig and Big Tuna are designed for max stability in addition to what have already been mentioned. I added those two because they are specifically meant for bigger fisherman or people who want more stability. Quote
bassinOUT89 Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 It would fit in the SUV, but he wouldn't fit in the kayak !! how so? It's rated for 550 pounds. 400 with motor, gear and persons (2). I'm at 300 and fish with my brother who's a soaking wet 135. With a trolling motor, battery and gear. I'm pretty sure we're pushing it.*edit, and comfortably i might add. It's not a kayak it's a pontoon boat. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 Last thing you want to do is put a kayak in the back of your vehicle after fishing. It is going to be wet and dirty and that will get all over you vehicle's interior. Maybe i missed it but why not load it on the roof? There are a ton of kayaks out there that work for bigger guys and they have all been mentioned above so i won't beat a dead horse there. Quote

I am not planning on standing up on this thing but maximum stability on the water would be best! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 You may be pushing the limits of boat capacity if you start getting into a lot of gear but the majority of boats you will be fine. Stability is also a personal thing as i know when i first started kayak fishing what i thought was stable was really aircraft carrier like. as i became more comfortable with myself in a kayak my needs changed. Stability is still huge for me though as i really like being able to stand up to stretch my legs or for certain techniques and that is a major reason i went with a Wilderness systems commander. Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 Kayak caddy, is that that thing that is like a trailer for your kayak? if so, the first time i saw that i thought it was the dumbest thing i have ever seen lol Quote

Thanks For stability look at a pelican raider, I'm 6' 2" about 240 I can stand on one of the pontoons and not tip it. Or the sun dolphin these are basically mini pontoon boats nothing more stable for the size. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 Yeah, it would just slow you down more than doing any good. if i am taking so much stuff that i need a separate kayak to carry my gear then i am taking way too much stuff and should just go buy a boat instead lol Quote

Super User Chris at Tech Posted April 22, 2015 Super User Posted April 22, 2015 Why not consider a johnboat you can tow on a trailer? Quote
Matthew2000 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Why not consider a johnboat you can tow on a trailer? I would go with a deep V if you put it on a trailer. Quote

BUT it was a real PITA if you cannot back up to the water. Heavy, very bulky and awkward. I doubt it would fit in the back of his SUV anyway. It's 48" wide. Quote
