Need Advice On Fishing Algae

Some of the lakes and ponds I fish the shore lines are just filled with algae. How would you guys fish it? And does algae hold oxygen like grass in warmer months? this is thick algae blooms I'm talking about. I've only used frogs on top of it and spinner baits/swim jigs along it.

If it's hollow underneath it then yes.  Solid, not so much.  They may relate around it to prey on the smaller fish and creatures that live in and feed on it though.  I'd probably fish it like you do except in the heat of the day I may try punching thru it to see if there are fish hiding below that mat if you can't get them to react with a frog.

I've used a weightless trick worm with good results if its not a solid mat. I use a swivel a foot ahead of my lure when fishing weightless to prevent line twist and in algae it has the added benefit of catching stray strands of algae before the foul my bait. I've caught bass on my worm with a chunk of algae the size of a tennis ball on my swivel.

Frog and jig. Try casting a frog out and stopping and twitching it a bit in those pockets/holes where the algae isn't growing. If I miss a hookset, I'll throw a jig out where the bass just hit and let it fall to the bottom. I use 50# braid. More often than not, when I pull a bass through i end up landing just as much algae/weeds as I do fish. (I.e. 3lb bass cover with just as much pond scum.)

A frog on top of the mats of moss/algae has produced some good fish at some of the local lakes lately. They'll get in super skinny water even when it's hot because it's so much cooler under that stuff.

ned rig with 1/32 oz mushroom head - any small plastic - you can swim it above algae - experiment with this and you'll catch some fish - the frog and weightless worm as mentioned above are also effective.

I punch through with heavy jigs or use a frog. Texas rigs work well if you can cast heavy enough to get through.

I will be getting a heavy rod for use with heavier bullet weights. Meantime, the frog and jigs are working.

I tie my power pro right to my 10 inch worms for punching through thick algae, I don't use leaders because of how much "stuff" gets stuck on it

Yup! Seems the tighter the spot the better! I like to flip a hollow body poppin frog with a rattle in it. A few twitches and the blow up have been fierce!

If you can get your bait to the outer edge (and back), run a fluke or buzzbait parallel to it and get ready. On my lakes with similar algae blooms like yours they're tearing this method up.
