Schweiger Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Hey guys I'm replacing bearings on my ol Shimano Curado 200's. The ABEC 7 orange seals I ordered come with 2 bearings per reel but upon breaking them down I see there are 3 bearings in each reel. There's one on each side of the spool (one of which I can't figure out how to remove-the inboard one) and another one under the line tensioner knob under the star drag. All the YouTube videos I've watched only acknowledge the bearing on the outside of the spool and the one under the line tensioner. Do I not need to replace the other spool bearing? Sorry unable to post pics. Also, should I be soaking the new ABECS in a solution before installing them? If so what solution? Guy at BPS said use lighter fluid? Thanks for any tips. Hope you all are enjoying your day. Quote
John G Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Hedgehog Studios makes a tool to remove the pin that is on your spool shaft. If it were my reel, I would replace all three bearings but there are some guys that think the bearing under the cast control cap serves no purpose. Quote
Crappiebasser Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Curados only have 2 spool bearings. One on the side plate and one under the tension knob. Quote
John G Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Funny thing that I have had two of the old B Model Cuados and back then, I wasn't into dress up parts, bearings etc and I don't ever remember taking the spool out so I have no idea how many spool bearing it has. I did pull up a schematic but I can't enlarge it to see it well enough. Quote
Schweiger Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 I've got the original schematics, there is 3. These are the old green Curados from 2000-2003'ish. I think you're right I need a tool to remove the shaft pin, thanks John! Quote

You need to make sure it works for your reel and with anything else, take your time and be careful so that you don't damage your spool. https://youtu.be/IkJClDHtTsA Quote
Capt.Bob Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Do yourself a favor and buy the Hedge Hog tool!!! I would highly recommend the stainless tool, for some reason cheaper and I found it much more durable than the anodized aluminum tool with the stainless push pins!!! The bearing on the tension knob comes into play when you have a load on the spool and gears,,,,,, as far as solvents if they are Boca Orange seals you should be good to go, if you want use acetone, lighter fluid will leave a slight petroleum film not a bad thing but not as residue free as acetone! I have installed a couple sets of ABEC 7's and end up using a drop of oil to quiet them, so I no longer spend the money as I find the ABEC 5 SS to do an equal job for me when properly lubed. Quote

Bob, Is the one you are referring to different than the one in the video? I have only used mine one time and it worked great. Quote
Capt.Bob Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 I have both but I had the aluminum body the blue one and with a couple ABU's with super stubborn pins I stripped the threads in the aluminum model. I don't think even the worst reels used in saltwater will give the stainless steel bodied model trouble!!! They are both identical except for the material the body is made of. By body I am talking about the piece that supports the spool shaft both had stainless push pins for removing the drive pins. Quote
