I thought this would be a good thread. Post up some convos you've had with people who just don't get it.

This one was with my Mom.

"But I thought I told you not to get any more fishing baits"

"These ones are different."

"They look the same to me"

"They all look the same to you."

"I want you to be saving money for college. You already have a bag full of baits."

"I am saving for college, Mom. I put away 70% of what I get. That's way better than what most people do."

"But that __ percent could come in handy."

"It does come in handy, Mom. I buy fishing baits with it!"

"I give up..........."

And I don't even buy that many baits.....I probably spend around 50 bucks a year on baits.

This one is one I get all the time.

[Random passerbyer]:  "Caught anything?"

[Me]: "Yep, caught ___ bass today."

"What'cha catch em on?"

**Show them the bait**
"Holy cow! That's way too big to catch a fish on. Are you pulling my leg?"

The best are the ones that pass by and it kinda goes like this

Them: "Are there really fish in there?"

Me:     "There are a few"

Them: "So are you trying to catch them?"

I've always wanted to be a smart$$$ and say something but I've always been nice.

My coworkers are baffled that I throw fish back. They've all told me to call them and they'll come pick up the fish if I'm just going to throw them back. They don't understand the concept of fishing for fun

Haha very funny posts! I feel like my dad is the worst! He's old school, he uses a bobber live worm and a split shot exclusively for all fish species. When i take him bass fishing ill suggest that he uses a lure or atleast a simple texas rig, but he just looks at me sternly and says "you gotta let em come to you"! He'll be pulling blue gill and crappie out and throwing back while im on the other side pitching stumps and brush catching 2-3lb bass. He's so set in his ways but ...thats my pop

As I often bank fish a community lake..

I cast & hook up.. 3, 15 to 18 year old girls approach me and begin dialogue...

1st girl says " did you just catch that ?"

Me. Uh, yes I did..

2nd girl says " it that a real fish ?"

Me. Uh, yes it is..

3rd girl says " are those real hooks ?"

Me. Uh, yes they are..

1st girl says "can I touch it ?"

Me. Sure

She replys oh my god, GROSS..

As I release fish..

Girl #3 says " what did you turn it loose ?"

Me. I always do..

Girl # 1 says " what's the point, then ?"

I finally looked at them and said " I'm quite certain you would not understand"..

Girl #1 says " yea, I guess I don't"

They thanked me and wondered off giggling..

Young girls are silly...

My wife is the most amazing thing ever, but she doesn't know a work from a spinnerbait. ANYTIME she say "Oh these are pretty" when looking at lures in the store, I buy them. They may be something ridiculous and "loud" but she is much more willing to let me buy things that she picked out lol.

I came across this one guy as i was fishing docks one day, hes pulling his pontoon in it to dock it.

Apparently this guy hated fishing and those who fished so hes just repeatedly criticizing me with things like "Did you abduct any fish today, murderer"

After a minute or so of ignoring him he gets close to me, i let him pass then get his attention by yelling "OH OH GOT ONE" he turns around, looks and me and goes, "So what is it, criminal?" And i just say "Your boat hitting the dock" as he proceeds to ram into a break an entire section.

My best day ever fishing to date

I gotta say, that doesn't sound very nice. But bet if I had been there, that would have been hilarious!

My brother fly fishes 95% of the time we go fishing, and everytime we go I ask him "What are you using today?"  He always just looks at me and says "bass bug" ( which is a small popper made of deer hair or cork)  It can literally be 12 degrees out and he' using a bass bug.  Or I'll make an order to TW show him all the awesome stuff and he just says "Expensive ain't it?"  or "I bet I catch more fish with this here bass bug (I look up and he's holding up a green 1.5" long deer hair bug) than that giant rat (my new Spro rat).  I just hope he's not right with that last one.

A few   older gentlemen were talking in a a bar about bass fishing. I was not in on the conversation , but just listening. It was funny as could be.  One  guy said . "I have two lures and if the bass are not hitting either of them , then they just are not biting . "

I just remembered one night a buddy and I went to fish a park after hours. (parks close at 10pm) and do some night fishing.  We got out and these two other people (who also weren't supposed to be there) asked if we were fishing for ducks.  I replied no, but I hear they taste a lot like chicken.  She then told me she was going to call the police for being in the park after hours and fishing.  Think she forgot she was in the park after hours herself doing something shady with a guy a lot younger then she was in their van.

Love that dock story though....that was pretty funny right there.

Not exactly a conversation, but a one-liner that always gets me when I'm fishing.

"Are there fish here?"

I try so hard not to be a smart ass.

Also recently had a funny conversation with a one of the typical Salmon/Steelheaders out here while bass fishing. He came over to say hi:

Him: Are you fishing for bass?
Me: Yes.
Him: What are you using?
Me: Just a crankbait (Norman Squarebill).

Him: That's too big for bass.
Me: Not really.
Him: *gives me funny look*

I wish he had still been there when a tiny 10 inch Cutthroat slammed it. :D

When I first got into bass fishing, every time I came back from the lake my parents asked me if I had caught any fish? And I'm like yeah but threw them back. There like you spend so much money and you throw back. they grew up in a third world country where cnr is unheard of. I'm just glad we made it to America lol.

Bass fishing awareness in Orange County is low among the general population, even with those who live on a lake. Given most folks here view the lake as a decorative water feature and that fishing is what people do in the ocean, here are some of the questions & comments I hear the most:

"Is that a trout?"

"Is that a catfish?"

"You will catch more fish if you use hotdogs instead of lures".

"Do they stock this lake?"

"Throw over here, I saw a huge fish there yesterday".

Most folks are just being friendly & striking up a conversation, so I keep my answers simple. I could tell them I'm fishing for Steelhead & they wouldn't know the difference. What is fun is while we are chatting (me in my boat, they on their dock), I'll casually skip a lure under their dock. The look on their face of "What the...?" is great, even better if I then wrestle a fish out from under their feet.

I've tried to explain to the "Why do you fish if you don't keep them?" people more than once, it's pointless. Right up there with the "Why do you need so much stuff?"

Although I will take a bass or two home for dinner. The one that always gets me is "Why did you throw a fish that big back"?

A lot of folks that grew up in depression times think I'm out of my mind to throw a fish back. I have many older family members that comment on my C&R habits and simply will never understand.

And he's not wrong either ;)

OP, moms are different. They know stuff you can't but at the very least least your vice is still a constructive activity. :)

We have lake near me that is stocked with tens of thousands of trout each year. It also has bass it...big old trout fed fatties

Evertime i walk up to that lake a trout fisherman will see that i have a jerkbait or swimbait tied on tells that i wont catch a trout in that lol...i say " youre probably right!:

Then when i catch a bass they look dumbfounded and say somerhing about not knowing there were bass in the lake
