I've been thinking hard on buying some jigs but have no idea where to start or how to use them.  But i do like the fact that they are pretty cheap compared to other lures.  For equipment i have one spinning rod and one baitcasting rod.  the spinning rod is a 6'6 M Bionic blade 8lb test and the baitcasting is a 7'MH bionic blade 12lb test which one would be sufficent and any help is much appreciated.

I like to use 1/4 oz jigs with thick skirts. (any brand)  All natural/dark colors will work great. Blue also works well.

Use your Meduim/heavy rod. You'll need the power for hooksets.

I usualy just bounce, twitch, hop, crawl, drag and jerk my jig slowly on the bottom. Fish around cover and in beds. You can also swim jigs, which is when you jerk/retreive it fast enough to keep it of the bottom. This can work great around wooden structure. The jig can imitate alot of things (usualy a craw) so you can fish it alot of different ways in alot of different places. If is a great lure to learn.

Tight lines :)

You only need 3 colors.  Black/blue, a brown/green, and white.

Sizes depend on the water you're fishing.  I like 3/8 oz. and 1/2 oz. for lake fishing.  3/16, 1/4, and 3/8 for river fishing.

Brands?  Micro Munch Grass Jigs, Mann's Stone Jig, Strike King's Bitsy Jig.

Trailers?  Netbait Paca Chunks.

Do not for any reason be afraid to throw big jigs (1/2-3/4 oz) they catch bigger bass.  :)

while aint texan makes some very good points you should not be too afraid of casting a jig imo.  when first learning it can be difficult to feel the strikes on a jig but learning to know what is going on underwater iskey and casting a jig can help you start to learn this.

zona did a good job describing the two ways people fish jigs on the most recent bassmasters show and guys like mike mcclelland do a great job casting a football head jig.  it is one of my favorite ways to fish a jig, although i like pitching as well.  i ussually dont go smaller than 3/8 oz jig when fishing for largemout and 1/2 is my go to bait.

use the search function as tehre have been soem excellent threads on jigs recently.
