Wind Sock Wise Or Dumb

Thinking of getting a wind sock but don't want to waste 60 bucks I have a 14ft Bass Boat I use in local small lakes with a 55lb

Trolling motor and wind has its way with me here in Nebraska since there is nothing to stop it for miles so thinking of

investing in a wind sock can I get some tips or advise for you all? Thanks and Tight Lines!

Order a light duty nylon flag of your choice from Ebay for about $7.00. They move with the slightest of air..

Or maybe check prices of a wx station with an anemometer for wind speed and direction.

My remote anemometer eats batteries,so buy one with a solid wire connection if you can.

A wind sock slows your boat as like a drift anchor thingy.

A wind sock shows which way the wind is blowing at the airport. A drift sock slows down your boat when drifting with the wind.

I use a sea anchor, or drift bag, under the right conditions.  If the wind is blowing from my back and above 15MPH I will but out the sea anchor and it will reduce the forward movement greatly.  I tie it to a back cleat and if I'm moving down a canal it keeps me in stealth mode and moving forward slowly even though the wind is stiff.  It has saved many days when the wind would blow me past the targets I'm trying to fish.  It is a great tool in the fishing arsenal.  Slight adjustments with the trolling motor keeps you on the correct path.  If you deal with stiff winds all the time it is a cheap tool to save your day.  Its well worth the money.

I used to keep 2 in my 16' aluminum. If you fish vast open areas or long stretches of shoreline they can really be great. I had a 70lb trolling motor so I could handle most winds but I still used them on occasion.

I have 2 in my 17' boat, but if its bad enough that I need to use both of them, I just put the boat on the trailer, go back to camp and drink beer.

Hint: if you get a drift sock from any place, pay attention to their recommendations as to size. Then DOUBLE it....then get two instead of one! Trust me, they are not all they're cracked up to be. And you'll need two large ones to slow your boat's drift by any significant amount.

yep ive done this a few times when drifting for catfish and strippers when the drift sock didnt slow us down enough. It does work.

Nebasska ,I would suggest you try the 5 gal bucket to see if you even like the concept.

Don`t trust the standard wire handle,replace it with rope.
