First off, before reading many forums from several of you about the Ned Rig and that it was a great way to catch fish.  I didn't give it much attention, but I saw some pics of Bluebasser's smallmouth he posted the other day and that caught my attention.  So I decided today that I was going to go find out for myself.  Cut a Zinker in half, put it on a 1/8 leadhead and went fishing.  Well first pond didn't think much of this bait until I made a cast to some cover and went to pull it past....bam....2lb bass.  Okay, it had my attention.  Went to another one of the many parks I fish, saw quite a few fish, some still on beds, but couldn't get a reaction from them.  Okay, the Ned Rig's turn.  First bed, 2 casts and the female ate it. Fished the bed a few feet from that one, and a buck bass.  Okay, now I'm seeing something.  No long periods of trying to get them angry.  They just picked it up.  Fished on and caught another one.  Then found one that hit it 4 times...yes I missed the bite 3 times.  But that was what amazed me, not a bed fish but a fish sitting up against the bank in a little spot of weeds watched it, tracked it as I worked it, and yes hit it 4 times.  Caught 4 others that I could see that bit, missed a few others as well.  Needless to say I ended up with 11 fish for my 5hrs of fishing.  All on the Ned rig. I am now a firm believer that this little rig WILL catch fish.  It's not flashy but it's simple, and it gets the fishes attention.  Looks like I'll be carrying one of these tied on this season and may be making it a part of my fishing arsenal.

What head are people using for this? I guess I gotta try it. Do you use anything fancy as far as a bait or just bite a senko in half?

I used some Z-man Zinkers since I had some and cut them in half with a pair of sissors.  And as for leadhead it was a Gamakatsu 1/8oz 1/0 ball jig head.

The traditional style head for the Ned is something similar to the Z-Man finesse shroomz head. The Z-Mans are a bit pricey and there are some guys on ebay and Ozark Anglers that make them cheaper.  For more info on the Ned I suggest checking out the Table Rock sub forum on Ozarkanglers.com.  That bait has become legendary in Southwest MO it seems.  Personally, I'm not really in to finesse fishing but there is no denying the Ned gets bit when the fishing is otherwise pretty tough.

For a little more info, here are recent articles from the Kansas City Star:

Go to a lighter head and smaller hook and it becomes even more effective. I normally use a 1/16 or 3/32 ounce head with a #2 or #1 hook. It's just such a subtle presentation that can look like so many different prey items and so little to look unnatural that they just can't seem to help themselves. I really think the shape of it looks a lot like a small craw when they go into full blown escape mode and pull their legs and claws in to streamline themselves as they scoot away, which is often when a bass attacks them because they're the most vulnerable then.

Will do.  Today was just a trial to see what it was about.  Looking forward to seeing what this approach yields this season around here.  Also let me know when you get your heads perfected with the weed guard although I did order some 1/16oz ball heads with a weed guard.

I too had heard of them before but had never fished them until last season. A friend convinced me to give them a shot on the river for smallmouth bass. His option for rigging them weedless is to use the Owner Ultra Finesse Ballhead (1/16th ounce, size 1 hook) with the Z-Man Finesse TRD.

I'm going to try this.

Just went through my gear & I have what I need, I think any way.

There are a few spots I fish where the brown bass can get a little extra fickle, if that's possible.

This little gem might be just what the Dr ordered.

We'll see.  I'll post my results but I'm expecting some surprised Bronze to end up in the net . . . .

Well let me know what your results are when you get a chance to fish them.  I'm going to give it another run tomorrow and see what happens.

I'll take the blame with a smile :) Especially when I'm catching smallies like these on that little bait.

From yesterday, one of the fattest smallies I've ever caught, 16 1/4" long and 3lbs 8ozs.

^^^ Those are some slab smallies! All on the Ned? On the TRD or another plastic?

On another note, how are you liking your new boat?

All on 1/2 a ZinkerZ, mostly PB&J (you can sort of see it in that largemouth's mouth), but I also like Bama Craw and coppertreuse.

Loving it so far. I've put more hours on it in 4 months than the previous owners did in 2 years :)

Wish I would have had fished that rig prior to that tournament at Havasu in Feb.  I think I would have thrown it the whole time.  Maybe next year if I get the chance to fish them again.
