I started using these this year and they work great in shallow areas, but have had issues with lip breaking off. One broke off the first day I used it. Smithwick sent a replacement, but the lip broke today on that one as well. Also had one break today on another one.

Is this the norm for them? Is there another brand that is more durable?

I have at least two dozen smithwicks & never had a problem with them. I think you have just had some bad luck.

I have not had that experience with Rogues. I have had lips break off with Rapalas and with the old Castaic hard baits with soft bodies. Generally happened when they hit a rock or something. Part of the cost of fishing.

I have more than 20 floating rogues and as many suspending models and it isn't an exaggeration and I've only had one break in 20+ years of using them. My one bad one was a chrome/blue back Jim Bitter signature Rogue with Xcalibur rotating treble hooks. What you need to do is contact Smithwick and let them know and hopefully you kept the package handy so you can give them the numbers as they may have a bad batch of lips or glue. Is the bill breaking off leaving a piece of it in the body or is it coming out of the slot in one piece? Are you hitting it on the bottom or off of cover? Which model is it? The model number can be found near the bar code, it will be letters followed by a 4 digit number.

I've had a few suspending models, and have yet to have an issue with them.

Never broke a Rogue. I've had some with the plastic bills get deformed and not run right though.

the small floating versions have a cheap lip on them and yes they do break. just have to be careful with them.

I was mistaken in saying the replacement they sent broke, but it was anther one I bought that did. Makes three total that have broke.

Which model was it? They have 5 different suspending models, so look at the bar code and you'll see letters and a 4 digit number.

The only times I have had problems with bills breaking off of lures is when I am banging them in the water to shake off weeds...I have never had issues with the Smithwick Rattlin Floating Rogues, but have seen some Rapala Dt Bills break, and also some original rapala minnows, but I figure it is because they are balsa and sometimes if you smack the water with any lure over and over, or even once, any bill can break I suppose...If you are banging the lure into structure etc. I would guess the plastic bills would not be all that durable, but I have never had problems with any Smithwick lures personally...maybe a bad batch? I know I am guilty of being too rough with many of my lures, so I usually blame any breakage on myself.

I've only had this happen when the lure was accidentally stepped on, but other than that I've never had one break off. Great bait though
