I.rar Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I'm debating whether or not an avail spool in my curado 51 with ceramic abec 5s would benefit my fishing style. I currently have it on a ML/F carbonlite but plan on a ML *** or the Phenix 683. I mainly throw baits with a total weight of 3/16 to 1/4 oz and get enough distance to catch fish but am curious if this spool with help gain distance, ease of casting or both. Is there a max lure weight where it would defeat the purpose of a lighter spool? Maybe casting 4" senkos? Also, I remember reading braid is a no go with these since they are thin walled and there is a possibility of bending the spool shaft. Any truth to that? Someone school me on these spools please. John G Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I have the Yumeya Spool in an XT1000 and without a doubt, it is much easier to cast a lighter weight bait such as an unweighted Zoom Finesse Worm, than with a regular spool. As far a as distance goes, the fishing that I do with my BFS combo is shorter targeted casts but I was getting over 20 yards with an unweighted trick worm and 10# braid and I wasn't even using the right rod. The Yumeya spool may be a better option cause IIRC, it holds more line than the Avail Spool and that would equate to more momentum for a longer distance cast. I just went in my backyard and the XT1000 Yumeya Spool / Loomis CR721 combo and 10# Sniper FC with a Zoom Finesse Worm was going over 20 yards without any issues. Quote
Cgrinder Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Braid is cool (usually) unless it's a honeycomb spool. Quote
masterbass Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 I say go for it because you have the ml rod already and the addition of the spool will get maximum potential out of your combo. I have the avail spool in my xt on an imx cr721. I'm not worried about line capacity because I use 10lb braid. It will sling an 1/8oz as well as 4" senkos. I love the ease of casting as well. 1 Quote
Hogsticker Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 I have the Yumeya spool in my Scorpion. For 3/16 and quarter ounce I think the stock spool is fine, especially with more aerodynamic baits. If distance is the name of your game a shallow spool isn't going to benefit greatly. A little added distance perhaps, but nothing earth shattering. The shallow spools are more geared towards true finesse fishing. Being able to use casting gear rather than spinning. I use mine for micro cranks and three sixteenths ounce jerkbaits. It allows me to cast those baits without fluff or over run where as the stock spool couldn't. I have 15 lb braid on mine. No problems there. I can also use it brake free, but again, distance isn't eye popping. It's nice to have as I switch between the shallow and stock spools while on the water. Quote
I.rar Posted April 17, 2015 Author Posted April 17, 2015 Do it I did it. Figured the amount I paid for the reel used and this spool, is about what it retailed for when new. Super excite! 1 Quote
