Fish_Rapala Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 I really didnt know how to phrase search words to search for the answer, so I apologize in advance if people ask this sort of thing all the time... I want to start making my own baits, but I dont want to re-invent the wheel. I've got some designs and colors in my head for a soft plastic bait, but there is no way to buy that design from a store. My question is, can I use something like clay or play-dough and shape it out, and pour plaster of paris over it? I assume you can, I just need to know what material will pull the creation out of the mold nicely after the mold has set... Also, I've never attempted one yet, and was wondering if there is a site where I can purchase a starter kit package deal...? I've visted lurecraft.com but feel like its a cheap generic site, like I cant trust I'm going to get a quality product from them. (Nothing personal, could just be the site design...)? Quote
Don B. Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 lurecraft .. generic? definately not. They're right up there with the others.. lurecraft, barlows, m-f, the list goes on. buy with confidence from them. you might also visit tackleunderground forums. lots of good advice on those forums. I'm not sure if I understand what you were asking in your question. can you make a master out of clay, pour your mold material over it, and then remove the master from the mold when your done? using clay, your master isnt going to fair so well. you could always bake it tho to make it hard. good luck! NewScreenNameAdvised Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Sculpy clay. You can get it at craft stores. I just bought some from Michael's. It was on sale...2 oz for $.99. You make what you want out of this and bake it in the oven as the directions on teh package call for. It's very easy. Quote
Bass Dude Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 I use that same Sculpy clay---works great. I made four lures out of one small box of clay. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted November 5, 2008 Super User Posted November 5, 2008 you can make your own clay with salt, flour, and water. just google how to make play dough. you gotta mix a certain ratio of salt, flour, and water, and then cook it on the stove and it will be just like play dough. i've done it, it worked out well. after you have your form made you can pour plaster over it. SENKOSAM Posted November 8, 2008 Posted November 8, 2008 here's a start: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/pouring_plastic_worms.html http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/pouring_plastic_worms_supplies.html To use clay, you must use silicone for deep mold and irregular shapes. Lurecraft has silicone molds which do quite well for most baits. Their plastic is good quality and consistent. LC is owned by Poor Boy Baits. Their service is the best. BobsTackleshack has great metal molds and also great service. Quote
