Anyone ever seen 'hair-skirts'?  I worked at tying this past winter and it turns out that I suck.  Not only do I suck, but I didn't enjoy it, either.  But I do like making rubber skirts and wire-tying jigs.  What I'd like to find is either pre-made hair skirts...or some hair-like skirt material that I don't have to tie --- can use bands or wire-tie.

Sound like anything you've come across before?

Not really. The deal with hair is tying it is an art. As you found, not all of us are artists.

Over the years I've tried a bunch of ways to short cut the hair jig tie.  I've never found one.

Never heard of hair skirts, but i am more than happy tying my jigs and flies anyways. That's half the fun! Keep at tying and you'll get better. Then you can start tying more elaborate jigs and flies.

I suck at tying hair jigs as well! I have a plan to make a mold to pour a grub with a hair tail.

The key to it is practice, it takes time but it isn't hard to master. I have a few videos on you tube showing how to tie and trying my best at explaining what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. The other thing is the fish don't care if your jig is ugly, my first buck tail jig for river smallmouth was really bad, it had bare spots and too much hair in one spot plus the collar looked bad as hair was sticking out all over. I was going to just cut it up but my friend to me to give it to him to fish, I figured he use it to make an idiot out of me. Well turns out he caught several good fish off it before he lost it and it just goes to show you it doesn't have to look perfect for it too work, a lot of mine leave a lot to be desired.

Those all look great. I especially like the icey blue and deep red ones in the bottom right corner. I bet you do pretty well with those.

Tying your own allows you the Luxury & Freedom to really customize  . . . . .

There's a ton of perch up here.

Reread what smalljaw67 said. Every word is true. You must be patient and keep at it. If you get frustrated when your first few turn out looking like a haircut on a punk rocker, don't throw the vise out a closed window, just leave the bench for a while.

The most difficult part of tying is applying the right tension initially to spread the hair around the shank. You want to be relaxed but alert at the same time. Work slowly and observe what your material is doing. More tension needed? Less tension? Once you've got the hair where you want it, increase tension with each wrap.

My preference is to do each jig in four segments: top, each side and then the bottom.

These are the very basics of tying but as you go along you will pick up the finer points, your speed will increase and you will proceed with fluidity. When you sit down to tie, go with the philosophy that "It'll be done when it's done." Be patient with yourself and believe that repetition is a key to learning.
