wuchr20 Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I once was at a camp with my friends. Behind our cabin we heard rattling that sounded like a rattle snake. We ran for our lives. Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted April 14, 2015 Super User Posted April 14, 2015 I'm very disappointed in you guys. I go after snakes when I fish, and when I'm driving around. I love to rescue the road-crossers from folks like you Unless it is venomous - Cottonmouths/Moccasin. They are easier to identify because they're quite belligerent and put off by your presence. Flee from them. Now in Florida, there are a few more out to get you, so some leeway for y'all. Just remember, snakes keep our rodent population in check!! So does Ace Hardware, owls, hawks, cats, dogs, coyotes, etc... As I said earlier... Only good snake, is a dead snake. Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I would never harm any turtle!!! But a snake if its not bright green or dark shiny black he is going down. Water moccasins I know for a fact are a very lethal snake because they will protect their territory witch could be anywhere. They are very aggressive. There has been multiple cases I have had them charge me. We had a incident 2 years ago in the Combahee river were people swim and as always there were multiple people swimming and from what I hear the boy was 15, went off from everyone. He started screaming and everyone went to get him and they couldn't because he was covered in water moccasins. They had to pull him up to shore with something. He was dead before they got him on shore. If I remember correctly water moccasins travel the rivers in big balls of 100s. I think that is when they bread not sure. That is a scary thing to think about in my mind. I can believe a moccasins trying to get in a boat but it would have to have something to help it get in I would think You can have picking snakes up but you sure wont see me touch one. oh wow, thats a wild story. i never heard that moccasins travel rivers in balls of 100s. that totally freaks me out. im not sure i could ever wade fish a river now. im seriously terrified of snakes, dont matter what kind. venomous or not. dead or alive. J McRae Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I don't deal with snakes at all. I've encountered five snakes along the bank this year already... At the same pond. I cannot imagine one dropping in to say hello while I'm in a boat. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted April 15, 2015 Super User Posted April 15, 2015 I hate to break it to you guys but Cottonmouths don't breed in balls. All those stories are just that, stories. There isn't one verified account of that ever happening. It's an urban legend, or a rural legend, as it were. 2 Quote
Hurricane Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 One sentence: Bill Dance Bloopers. When the snake fell out of the tree on to him.. lmao Quote
Hurricane Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 When I was 10 we were fishing lake wateree I think.it was in Carolina. ..We were fishing in a cove when we saw a snake come from the grass and into the water towards our boat and wrapped around the motor.. It was crazy. .Definitely was not happy.. Maybe it had a nest in the area and was protecting it? No clue. Quote
Super User geo g Posted April 15, 2015 Super User Posted April 15, 2015 I see snakes about every other trip while bank fishing in Weston. Most are not poisonous, but I have seen a few cotton mouths. I always wear boots and always watch where I am walking while bank fishing. I have had a snake follow the boat in the glades looking for a place to hang out. I easily out ran him with the trolling motor. A snake in the canal is an easy target for just about any size gator, and the canals are full of gators! In the Everglades, the state has done stomach content study of captured gators, and have found most of their diet is reptiles, frogs, turtles, not fish. So snakes are an easy target. There is a picture on the internet of a python under a bridge along Alligator Ally and it is a big one. That picture was taken about 4 years ago. The state just announced another python hunting season with a cash prize for most caught, and big python. I read the pythons are having a negative effect on the nesting birds in the swamp. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted April 15, 2015 Super User Posted April 15, 2015 I heard a story many times of a swimmer who was attacked by a ball of cotton mouths , only it happened in a farm pond. Funny thing is , there are no cotton mouths this far north. People believe it anyways 1 Quote
Crappiebasser Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 This past Saturday my neighbor found a water moccasin sunning on the back deck of his boat that was tied to his dock. The snake was smart it slid of in the water and stayed right against the hull like it knew he wouldn't shot his boat. I'm a kill em all guy too. I hate all snakes. Quote

It was crazy. .Definitely was not happy.. Maybe it had a nest in the area and was protecting it? No clue. That's my turf.. Scary man. I have a couple stories. One I was wake boarding in lake wateree lol yeah the same lake. I wiped out a little bit and as I look over i see this dead catfish probably 4 feet away from me, with a cottonmouth attached to it! I start to kind of move my arms away and this snake gets off the catfish and starts swimming around. At this point the boat is real close to me as is the snake. I grab the rope and tell them to gun it, when I got back in the boat a little later there were 2 holes in the side a few inches from my foot. Scariest thing I've ever expirenced. Another one I was fishing at a pond in my neighborhood. I'm fishing by this tree, I throw by buzzbait by it and on the way back in it gets hung up in it. I shake it out and along with the buzzbaits a water moccasin falls out and starts swimming really fast at me. I grabbed a 7 foot stick and shoved it in the snakes head. Pinned him on the bottom till the stick went all the way through its head. Quote

Others may as well, not really sure. They sure do! In about 77 @ starve hollow state park a young girl jumping off a concrete diving platform was bit to death, no one could help her.We had to vacate.. Really quick too, we were camping at the time, I was 12.. A lot of panic. Park was shut down for 2 years... Scary stuff. I believe they were water snakes, she was bit, but as I recall, she likely drowned, at any rate it was horrific... Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted April 15, 2015 Super User Posted April 15, 2015 Also, Garter snakes ball up like that around here, about this time of the year.. Of course they are on land.. I seen it once, the snakes are harmless, but man, so many, I mean multiple balls of snakes rolling, snakes running from here to there, spread over 2-3 acres. I was running a survey crew at the time. Creepy, creepy sight I will tell you.. Quote

Super User Jrob78 Posted April 15, 2015 Super User Posted April 15, 2015 There are many species of snakes that ball up like that but cottonmouths aren't one of them. That scene from Lonesome Dove is pure fantasy. I can't find one news story of that ever happening but I can find many from herpetologists saying it doesn't happen. It's even on snopes. http://www.snopes.com/critters/snakes/waterski.asp 3 Quote

I guess it was kind of like the story of the fish was THIS big and it keeps getting bigger Lol. The story was true about him gettin bitten to death but I never read the actual story just a picture and the title. What most likely happened were he got near some mating snakes and they got ticked. I appologize Quote
blackmax135 Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I just went by what 100s of others stated about the incident. When people took the movie and added it in Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 My little brother routinely hooks snakes while fishing the creeks and acts like he is going to sling them into the canoe. I don't care. I'm used to it, and they are just water snakes. Whoever is with us usually gets the crap scared out of them though lol. 1 Quote

I think that story must be so popular because it's about as scary as it gets. lol Quote

gunsndrums1 Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I have zero problems with snakes at all. I think they are kinda cool actually, what I really hate is spiders, that is a WHOLE other story of why I hate those 8 legged freaks. Quote
