Hi All -

My brother and I are heading out on a 3 day float on the Current River near Akers Ferry, Mo. in the middle of May. We are hopefully gearing up to do some smallmouth fishing on the river. Does anyone have any tips for smallmouth in small streams? Has anyone fished this river or any of the others in that area?

All the best.

You might get bit using crankbaits, but most likely you can use a walk the dog like a Sammy 100, Sexy Dawg Jr, Zip N Ziggy or a Super Spook Jr. Also, soft plastics on 1/8oz heads will work well. I prefer baits like a Sweet Beaver, Ultravibe Speed Craw, Turbo Crawz or other similar baits. Have fun!

Don't be afraid to throw a jig either with a craw imitation trailer. Some smaller ones will still bite it, but you'll catch bigger ones on average.

I've never done the Current but I've been on the Elk several times, it's a blast. I like the small walking baits in faster moving water and small finesse worms or craws on a shakyhead in slower moving water. Flukes can be good as well and I'd certainly try a Ned rig also.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I'll be sure to give those suggestions a try. Counting down the days!
