Mista bass Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I'll fish a very large pond full of largemouth. It was an old rock quarry that they filled in many years ago. The place is very secluded and holds the most concentrated number of lunkers I've ever seen. They're hitting jerkbaits pretty frequently. What would you guys use to pick apart the water a little slower? The water is about 45-50. I'm up in ct so the ice just cleared within the last few days. I caught my PB here and I know there's bigger but most of the fish I'm getting with jerkbaits are only between 4-6 pounds. I want to pick apart the water slower but I just don't know what to try. They're still pretty sluggish. I've tried jigs and senior but had no luck. Im guessing main forage is some kind of baitfish, bluegill, and crayfish. I've never seen any perch or any other forage. I've only seen 3 species, largemouth, bluegill, and monster carp. Quote

Mista bass Posted April 14, 2015 Author Posted April 14, 2015 ? Um..... What was the problem again? Haha trust me there is way bigger in this spot. I see big girls in the spring on beds and some I have seen have got to be over 10. I just can't get them to bite. Those 4-6 pounders are beyond plentiful. I can go for a day (6-8 hours) and pull 20-30 out in that size range. Quote

sprint61 Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 BIG swimbaits.I agree with this, get yourself a nice bluegill one. They will bite eventually. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted April 14, 2015 Super User Posted April 14, 2015 Before you know it, we'll be reading your name in 2015 version of here: http://www.ct.gov/deep/lib/deep/fishing/general_information/freshwatertrophyfishawardreport.pdf Quote

Mista bass Posted April 14, 2015 Author Posted April 14, 2015 I guess I was being too optimistic. Of course today I get there and not a single bite. Granted I was only there an hour before the girlfriend was ready to go eat. Still nice to get out there! Quote
CRANKENSTIEN Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 10" strike king anaconda T rigged 3/8 to 1/2 oz. swim it along. Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Not much you can do except keep at it and maybe throw a bigger bait. I'd be happy with what you are catching. Maybe try throwing a spro rat at night or wait till you see those bigger fish on beds. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted April 15, 2015 Super User Posted April 15, 2015 Get yourself a 8" rof12 Huddleston and slowly swim that thing or a Savage Gear Line Thru. Color could be shinner to look like a bably carp, or just about anything, big fish eat big baits. Of course the bait comes in at about 4.5oz so you may need a swimbait set up if you don't have one. Cgrinder Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 It's never too cold for a lipless crankbait. Quote

I haven't hopped on the giant swim bait wave yet. I'd need a whole new set up and I'd rather get a new glass crankbait rod for throwing squarebills or a top water set up. I just wouldn't fish the swim baits enough to justify a set up dedicated to them. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted April 16, 2015 Super User Posted April 16, 2015 My swimbait rod ran me $59.99. It only gets expensive after the first fish. My profile pic was my first swimbait fish. I had 3 Hudds at that time. One year later, two swimbait rods, a dozen or so Hudds of various sizes, some Mattlures, and a couple Triple Trouts. If you're not into throwing the Hudd, then get yourself some 168 S-Weavers and try those out. You should have a rod that can handle those, or just suffer and continue to catch 4-6lb fish that none of us can feel sorry about you catching wishing they were bigger....lol Good luck. Quote
