My Johnson 70 two stroke may have a boo boo. I had this boat about 3 months now. Been a great motor for my 16 foot Cajun. I was running it with earmuffs in driveway today. Friend noticed it had water from pee hole which is normal. But also had water coming from the upper and lower part of outboard motor. About one foot above the prop. Kinda where the upper and lower meet. I think it's done it since I had it and never knew it was bad. He said it may be the "case". If it is, how much to fix and is it worth a new motor?? Boat all else is great. Love my little 1989 beast lol. She needs some help though. I probably won't put it on the water until fixed. Good idea? Can this problem worsen? Or is it like an oil leak in a car except this is water and will still cool the motor?

You do NOT want water in your lower unit. Change your lower unit oil and see if its milky. If it is, you need to take it in.

Since this is your first boat you are getting the "education" that comes along with it - like it or not.

 

And you've already invested a decent amount of both time & $$, each time there is a new problem, you've come to realized that there is a good chance you'll be shelling out even more of both.

 

 At this point it's going to be fairly difficult if not impossible to diagnose what the problem is with your O/B over the internet.  But just like any engine, the cooling system is designed to be a closed system.  Your O/B has only 1 designated discharge point.  If you are seeing something else it may be time to take it to a professional if you don't have the knowledge & skill to do it yourself.  Might me minor might not.

Water will come out of all kinds of places. If the motor is running fine, don't worry about where the water is coming from while on a hose, as long as it's not coming out of the power head itself or the carburetors, you probably have nothing to worry about. It's a water cooled exhaust system.

As for coming out between where the lower unit joins the mid section, that's not going to bother a thing, and is a common occurrence on Johnny Rudes.

Hey guys, I had it checked out. All normal. The motor is from the late 80's early 90's and he said often the discharge point won't be the only place to lose water from. As long as the mechanics of the motor are staying dry and the water pump is circulating the water then I am good to go. Also the compression test was perfect!!! :-)

Water from the pee hole is just to tell you its picking up water, it isn't the only place it exits, and a plugged pee hole doesn't mean your motor isn't getting water. It's just a small bypass hose from the main cooling system. Otherwise, water will discharge from the exhaust in the prop and the upper part of the lower unit. There are pmenty of YouTube vids that document this - might even be one for your motor.
