Just a quick question. When you guys are fishing offshore, do you position your boat to cast towards shore and reel out, or cast out and reel towards the bank? It seems like the latter should be the case and I seem to have better luck doing that with any baitfish pattern, and, I assume, it's because baitfish are more likely swimming towards the shore. But my science is completely baseless...

I dont quite understand the question. If you're referring to fishing down a shore line I will parallel cast most of the time unless targeting a piece of cover . For instance last year 6 to 8 foot depths were really producing for me. I keep the boat at that depth Parallel cast and the lure is in the targeted range for the entire cast , not just part of it .

There are no hard & Fast rules here.   On some spot's, one way may be better than the other.

The prevailing wind & or current may dictate you choice.

I will say that if the water gets pressured, and most anglers position a certain way because it's "Convenient".

I will almost always at least try something else.

When Fishing structure & or deep cover - it's often all about your Presentation Angle.

I fish up hill and into cover and structure as often as I can.

The shoreline and an offshore breakline are often totally unrelated.
That said, there's really no specific rule to follow regarding your line-of-retrieve.
Naturally, retrieving the lure 'upslope' is going to follow bottom contour the best.

However, when you know the holding depth of fish, retrieves that run parallel to the breakline

will spend more time in the strike window.
