I am looking for a rod with a lot of backbone to pitch  1/2oz up to 1oz Tungsten weight plus the plastic into moderately heavy shoreline cover. I don't want a Flippin rod. I am looking at the GL2 855 JWR. I hear the GL2 has a really comfortable handle but that's it.

They are not bad rods at all, I use a few, I use glx and other higher end rods as well.. The only argument that stands up at all against these rods were simply retail prices. That's my opinion on them anyway..

I just got back from Gander Mountain and they had a pretty impressive selection of GL2's. They did not have the 855 but they did have an 854. I took my Scorpion XT1500-7 with me and I mounted it on the 854 and I thought that they were a great match. It isn't the lightest combo but the 855 should be fine for what I want to do.

Right, not going to be overly balanced at all, on my 894 I have a 300d on it @ 10.2 oz it's perfect.

On my 853 I use a 50e, they are a good stick.

It isn't a bad rod, I really like the handles on them but at the $200 dollar price point there are a lot more rods that are better. At $200 they are heavy, heavier than most rods that are 1/2 the price and they use good guides but a lot will argue, myself included, that are the current price they could have put alconites on the rod. I put the GL2 is the same category as the Dobyns Saavy, good rods that are way over priced for what you get, in my opinion I would say the GL2 should be around $100 to $115, then it would be a good rod, at $125 to $140 it is a decent stick. My biggest problem is they made it close to the GL3 in price and the GL3 is a much better rod so if you are going to spend that much why not add a few bucks and go to the GL3. BTW I'm a fan of G.Loomis rods, at one time is was pretty much the only rods I used other than my customs.

Other rods in the Loomis line up that I have looked at is the MBR845GL3, BCR855 Mossyback and the GLX 855 JWR. I have even talked to Bronzefly about the GLX. The GLX is what I originally wanted. I could put my CU50E on it and be done. The 845GL3 can be had for around $250.00 new and the Mossyback for a little less than that.

I've owned several rod brands in the same price range,

but in my personal experience the GL2 brings up the rear.

They are acrually great rods...just not great in thier pricepoint...no reason for a gl2 to be north of 150.

I got my old blue gl2s over ten years ago and they are excellent and were under 150 retail (barely) at the time

When they shot up over 200 and turned maroon i never got another...i figured for the money the st croix ltb was the way to go...and that ltb is worth the price!

i have rods of all brands and some glx of loomis.  I also have one gl2 crankbait rod and I find it an incredible graphite rod.

not the same one you are looking at, but I am very happy with gl2 and most likely is my new price point on rods as I don't see much value higer than that.

I like my GL2 rod just fine. I paid about $120 for it new, though. I got it during the rod credit program at BPS during the classic a couple years ago.

IIRC, The Hookup Tackle had the GL2 Rep Samples for $125.00. That would have been the time for to get one.

They are not bad rods at all.  A bit overpriced, but not bad.  I really like the 835C JWR I have, and as others have stated the handle is very comfortable.

No they're not that bad. I have other rods that are lighter and more sensative, but they work just fine and I love the one I have. Go pull on one and decide for yourself.
