I recently bought 2 BPS MH 7'6" Extreme rods. They are really nice. Here's the problem. From reel seat to rod butt is about 2" to long for my liking. I coulg cut off the rod butt section and install a new one, but fear I will ruin the rod. I've never attempted this before. How difficult is it? Any write ups on how to?

The gloomis project was way more involved. To simply trim a butt wrap with tape to ensure there are no sprinters and cut with a hack saw or cut off wheel. You can reuse the butt or install one of your choice. Installation varies by model. A simple chair leg cap in 1" will suffice. Your call

I assume the new one would be glued on. Any recommendations on glue?

You mentioned reusing the old rod butt. Curious how I would go about this?

Cork grip?  I think DVT means that if you make two cuts, one right at the butt and the other two inches forward you can put the butt back on at the 2 inch forward location.  Any paste type epoxy will do, i recommend the fast cure ones so any clamping is made easier with less set time.  I've done this to one of my rods and have many years on it with no problems.

The trick is to get the cut clean and square.  I use a little clamp device that I can put against my table saw crosscut guide, put the rod in it being VERY careful that it is square and level, use the finest carbide tipped blade you have, and slowly pass it through the saw blade.  Taping will ensure no splinters, but if you do it correctly as above, you'll get no spinters anyway.

If the butt area is tapered, make the pieces match by sanding with 150, 220, 600 sandpaper.  Don't go too far with the 150.  A final sanding of the whole grip with the fine will make it all look alike.  I would then use Tru oil or cork seal to keep it nice.  Try the oil or seal you are going to use on the scrap section of the butt to make sure you like it.  Questions?  danekm@aol.com

Any thoughts on these aluminum Eva butt caps? I could get the green one to match rod. The handle is cork but I don't think it would look to bad. My concern with rubber is it may snag on sleeves or arm when casting.

I've used them on a few builds. The rubber isn't all that sticky, so I doubt it will grab. The ID of them is 20mm. I'd cut the rod abut a half inch shorter than the desired length and sand the cork down to match the 20mm of the butt cap. Add some adhesive and you're good to go. BTW, they weigh about 1.25oz, so it'll help balance too.

I think that an arrow saw at an archery store should be the tool of choice to cut a graphite fishing rod.

WOW! Was that NRX already broke or are you doing mods?

Mods. Check out my thread in the rod building section. The mods are pretty well documented.
