livemusic Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 I bought a Pfleuger President spinning reel, I think it is 6940 model. It's the largest one they had. All my other gear is bait casting reels. I want to try a spinning reel. The President has fantastic reviews all over the internet. So, what rod? I want this for bass fishing and useful for fishing flukes and other soft plastic baits. I fish heavy cover lakes (trees). How stiff, what length, preferred action? I don't want to spend a fortune; I'd prefer to keep this under $100 unless you feel strongly that a certain rod is a must-have that costs more. Also, what line do you recommend? I like to be able to see the line. Quote
Dyerbassman Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Check out Fenwick rods. Priced right and well made. I love mine. Quote
Weld's Largemouth Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Check out the Berkley Lightning Shock spinning rod on Tacklewareh0use. Its only $50 and reviews say it performs way above its price point. I would get the 7' Med Lt. Looks like a perfect match with that Pflueger President. I would use 20lb Sufix 832 advanced braided line. This line has never let me down, super strong, I pull 6 lb fish with it through reeds and muck in the waters of South Florida. It has never snapped only me unless I tied a bad knot. Plus, its last FOREVER. It is a higher end line, at about $35 for 300 yds but trust me, invest in some good line and you will be thankful. Ive had this same line on my spinning reel since Spring of 2014 and it still is as strong as the day I put it on... I caught my PB of 7.5 lbs a few days ago on this line... My favorite line ever. Good luck Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted April 11, 2015 Super User Posted April 11, 2015 I'm a fan of Fenwick rods. The HMG and AETOS lines have lifetime warranties and Fenwick customer service is pretty good. You can do something dumb with your rod and it costs you $10 to get a new one. Fenwick has been pretty nice to me over the past few years. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted April 11, 2015 Super User Posted April 11, 2015 I am also a fan of Fenwick. Just ordered and HMG from Gander Mountain. They currently have a $20 rebate on HMG and a $30 rebate on Aetos. Personally wouldn't opt for a ML in heavy cover unless I needed that power to load the rod. Might get away with a Medium power rod. I would opt for Fast or Extra Fast action. The Aetos is a beautiful looking rod if you don't mind spending that much. Otherwise I would look at the 7' MF or MHF HMG depending on the weight of the lures you will be using. I like Siege Neon Tangerine for its visibility. For a spinning rod and what...and where...you plan on using it, a bright braid such as 832 Neon Lime might be a better choice. I personally don't like heavy mono, co-polymer or fluorocarbon on a spinning reel. Quote
KayakKid Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 For line I would suggest braid (a no brainier for me), I would go about 10 to 15 pounds since you already have your upper poundage's covered with your bait-casters, and I wouldn't go too lighter as for braid has a very small diameter comparably to mono or fluorocarbon. aprilbass101 Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Pro Source Braid with Sunline FC Sniper fluorocarbon leader for most applications! Rods : Fenwick- HMG or Higher St.Croix- Premier or Mojo Fishing 13- Black ***- "My Favorite" I would recommend 6'6' to 7', Medium to Medium Heavy, Fast to X-fast tips All those rods are very good quality back-up with good warranties....$100-$150 Quote
Super User MickD Posted April 11, 2015 Super User Posted April 11, 2015 I see the question of "what rod for this reel" as being meaningless. The rod is not determined by the reel but by what techniques you plan to use and what fish you are going after. It's not about the reel. for what you have mentioned on your expected techniques, go for the most expensive (you usually do get what you pay for-more $$ will most likely give more sensitivity) graphite, medium power, fast action, rod designed for about 1/4-5/8 lure weight you can afford. If you have preferences of grip style (EVA, cork, split grip, etc), go for it. Since you are interested in jigging, soft plastics, you do not want any action slower than fast. Extra fast is ok. Legnth is just a personal preference, but I prefer 7 feet for the techinques you are interested in. I would line it with about 10-15 pound braid, use a 15 pound flouro leader, for max sensitivity. Use either a double uni line to line knot or an Alberto knot (follow the directions exactly), and you will have a great soft plastics/jigging outfit. It's not about the reel, it's not about the brand, it's about getting a rod suitable for your preferred technique, and in this case it will be a fast or Xfast action, medium power, graphite rod, 6 1/2 to 7 feet, other details determined by your preferences and available money. Chrisran99 Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 Just went through the same dilemma for my Revo SX 30. I use the Fenwick HMG casting for speck and reds in the marsh and it's great, but I found its fishes like a heavier power rating than other rods. So I think the medium would be a great choice for the type of fishing your looking to do. It has great backbone and sensitivity but, I chose the Duckett Ghost 7' medium to use for shaky head and weightless sinkos. The Ghost for me, has a softer tip witch brings these baits alive. I took it out today for the first time and it preformed great. Quote
