Scorchx1245 Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 So I'm throwing the new shadow rap for ice out bass and I caught several small is and a couple lmb in 5 hours but lost 3 of them to pike and I think one was tiger muskie, beautiful fish. Normally they maybe get two of three treble but one inhaled the whole bait! I felt bad trying to get the hooks out because he was very uncooperative for being a 32 inch pike. I couldn't keep is jaws open and he kept shaking and rehooking himself, needless to say after 3 mins of wrestling and blood on the boat I got him free and he swam off in torrent. Anybody got any tips for removing a triple treble hook jerk bait from a pike? Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted April 11, 2015 Super User Posted April 11, 2015 Look into getting a "Jaw Spreader". It's a fairly common & inexpensive tool used to hold a toothy critters face open for safer hook extraction. If you work over the side of your boat, tie the tools (spreader & long nose pliers) off to your vessel or when the fish shakes it's head (and it will) you'll lose them into the deep. Good Luck A-Jay Quote

SNK Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Look into getting a "Jaw Spreader". x2. Always have one with me. Then again, I fish for pike when I can't get the bass to bite. Makes things much easier most of the time when they have really taken in a lure. Quote
Scorchx1245 Posted April 11, 2015 Author Posted April 11, 2015 Perch color ftw right now. Love the action, I'll have to pick one up from bps or field and stream jaw spreader. Never had a pike inhale all three trebles! I was using the shallow covering rocky out points or over the secondary points. 1 Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 A long set of needle nose pliers, a large net, and a pair of jaw spreaders are very useful tools. If you are going to use jaw spreaders, BEND THEM TO ADJUST THE SPREADING FORCE FOR THE FISHES SIZE!! This will reduce injury to the fish, and prevent them from flying back at your face. Also invest in a good set of hook/wire cutters, in case the fish is hooked in an awkward spot. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted April 11, 2015 Super User Posted April 11, 2015 You can't fish pike waters unless you have jaw spreaders. Quote
