Andre_g123 Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 So last year I really got back into fishing. I picked up a g loomis nrx and a ci4+ as my main spinning set up. Very happy with my choice. Now I want to get a bait casting set up. Id like to keep it around $300 total. id like the set up to be somewhat all around but I fish mostly jigs and soft plastics. Im really looking for a sensitive rod. Thinking mh-H action (looking at the 7'1 H Phenix M1) any help would be greatly appreciated. Quote

Super User scaleface Posted April 11, 2015 Super User Posted April 11, 2015 If I had three hundred dollars and no casting equipment I'd buy two $150.00 combos . 2 Quote
Big Al23 Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 To keep it at $300, I recently purchased 3 new Shimano Crucial rods. Haven' got to use them yet but they balance nice with my Scorpion and 50E reels. Match it up with a new Curado or Chronarch? Monster Tackle still has the Curado for $139 I believe with code Curado40. Scorchx1245 Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Diawa tatula type r with the tatula matched rod. Field stream had the rods on sale 99.99 reel is 200. Quote
tater555 Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 7-3 mh duckett micro magic and a Curado i will be under 300..: like 260 ... I have this exact rod and love it. I found it for $120 on the auction site, and they still have them. As far as a reel goes, I would pair it with a lews tournament pro. I would recommend a tatula for this rod but I feel it's a little heavy to put on such a light rod. I have a quantum exo on mine and it is perfectly balanced and super light. When I had the tatula mounted on my micro magic, it felt like the extra weight of the reel took away some of the sensitivity. Quote

Starchalopakis Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Don't mean to hijack the thread but is a rod around 7' (give or take a couple of inches) what you would recommed for plastics? Quote
tater555 Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Don't mean to hijack the thread but is a rod around 7' (give or take a couple of inches) what you would recommed for plastics? It really depends on what's most comfortable to you. I like a 7'3 for when I'm on a boat or in a wide open space, I feel like it gives me a little more leverage, line pick up and casting distance. But whenever I am fishing from a bank with alot of trees or bushes, I have a 6'10 rod I will use so that I have less chance of snagging a limb in the middle of a cast. If you think a regular backlash is bad, wait till your lure catches something behind you in the middle of a full force cast haha 1 Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 Curado I from eBay for 140 shipped Daiwa Tatula from amazon ~100 you might have to pay shipping For rods around the 150 range, there are way too many to mention. Quote
SenkoGuru Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 I would highly recommend the Duckett Micro Magic Pro 7'3 medium heavy for the rod. It will run around $165 I like the Daiwa Tatula Type-R Baitcasters and they can be bought for around $125 That is $290 and a fantastic combo for texas rig's, soft plastic's and jig's Anything that is (Baitcasters) Daiwa, Shimano and Lew's and also above their budget reels will be great, just buy the one that feels/looks the best to you. People do not talk much about them but the Quantum Smoke Rod's are very good and can be bought cheap on certain sites right now (Last years model) Last time I checked they were selling for around $75.00 and they are very much worth that price. I do not like Quantum reels though. Rod's in the $100 to $180 price range that are really good are Powell, Phenix, Irod, Kistler, Duckett, Daiwa, Falcon, *** are all good rod's. Stay away from lower priced (Savvy) Dobyn's. They are VERY bad for plastic's/jig's. The high quality rod's are going to be Megabass, G.loomis, Kistler Z-bone. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted April 12, 2015 Super User Posted April 12, 2015 St. Croix Avid 7' MH Fast (Gander Mountain has them $40 off) and with what ever reel fits the budget (Tatula, Curado I, Lews BB1). Good luck..... Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted April 12, 2015 Super User Posted April 12, 2015 You already have a very nice rod you are looking at. Any reel from the big 4 will be fine. Just find one that has what you're looking for. Brake system, spool capacity, gear ratio, ect. Quote
DocNsanE Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 If you are thinking of going with the tatula, keep in mind the Type R has very little performance improvements over the regular tatula. If you want the higher gear ratio it will be worth it, oherwise you are mostly paying extra for cosmetics. (Not my own opinion, just something I've heard often enough. Noticed a few people recommending the type-r, just thought I'd point it out). Quote
beenreelsince94 Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I had $300 to spend for my first bait caster and i invested in a Abu Garcia Veritas 7' and a Abu Garcia Revo SX. I liked it so much i bought another exact setup. Hope this helped! Quote
