Joedodge Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 So a local tackle shop is having there annual spring Saturday. And they are selling fins wind tamer ( my preferred braid) at 20% off spools or spooling reels at 5 cents per yard. Most of my reels are spooled up and good to go. But I'm curious do you guys keep extra spools of line on hand? Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted April 10, 2015 Super User Posted April 10, 2015 Absolutely. I don't keep 5 extra spools of the same thing but I always have spare line in everything I use. I keep it in a cool dark closet and have never had trouble with it. Braid probably keeps a long time. Quote
Penguino Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Sure. Especially braid. But not mono and fluoro, because memory gets progressively worse. Braid doesn't have this problem, so I stock up whenever I can because I know that I will eventually use it in the future. Quote
Joedodge Posted April 10, 2015 Author Posted April 10, 2015 It's a great deal to get reel spooled maybe I'll get a extra spool to have its not as good a deal buying bulk spools but still a deal Quote
Turtle135 Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 I would pickup braid when it is on sale and feel fine holding onto it for several seasons. On monofilament I only keep enough around for the next couple of months for the reasons Penguino mentioned. Quote
Joedodge Posted April 11, 2015 Author Posted April 11, 2015 I don't use any mono it's just to much hassle to me. I'm gonna get a couple reels spooled up and get an extra 15 and 30 pound 150 yd spool to keep on hand Quote
Cameron211 Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 I Always keep an extra spool. You never know Quote
Mista bass Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 I keep braid and I'll keep flouro as well. I'll only keep the used flouro as leader line. I've used old mono as a leader too. If you're using the line for a leader you can usually just stretch it really well and the memory won't be too bad. I wouldn't go spoiling a whole reel with year old flouro though. Tight lines! - Matt Quote

Super User gulfcaptain Posted April 11, 2015 Super User Posted April 11, 2015 It takes a long time to go through filler spools at 3 yards at a time. I have line that is stil in great condition I keep in my apartment in a drawer (apartment is always about 74). Some of it is 3years old, stil has no memory and is good to go. Proper storage is key. Do not keep extra spools of braid on hand though, won't buy unless I'm respooling a reel or 3. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 11, 2015 Super User Posted April 11, 2015 Yes and no, but more no. I'll keep 30# braid and mono for some household tasks (tied up some orchids with mono this week), lighter lines which I mainly use get tossed out if less than about 30 yds. I buy specific line for leaders. This thread is kind of coincidence, as I was taking inventory this morning on line I need to buy I threw out a bunch of line I have no need for. Not quite hoarder more of a pack rat, it's hard for me to things away. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 11, 2015 Global Moderator Posted April 11, 2015 I have a pegboard full of spools of line from one shot spools to 1lb spools. Quote

Not quite hoarder more of a pack rat, it's hard for me to things away. I'm like this as well. Hate to throw out something that MAY someday be of use. I don't have any flowers or a garden in which to tie up any plants, tho. Maybe I should send you a few spools that only have a few yards left on them. Yes I keep spare line. Never had a problem with keeping mono for years. Recently bought a couple 3000 yard spools of AN40. Expect there to still be some left when I die. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted April 11, 2015 Super User Posted April 11, 2015 I usually keep an extra spool or two around.... Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted April 11, 2015 Super User Posted April 11, 2015 I have around 25,000 yards or so. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted April 11, 2015 Super User Posted April 11, 2015 I keep most of my apart lines sealed up in boxes in my fishing shed. However, when I go on several day fishing trips, I make sure I throw the line kit in the car. Line kit is a medium sized plastic box with several spare spools of line for the different rigs I'll be using that trip. I don't want to get spooled one day and have that rig be out of action for the rest of the trip. Currently line kit consists of: 1 bulk spool of 17 Abrazx, 1 bulk spool of 10 lb Abrazx, several filler spools of 15 lb Abrazx, compact line winder that works on bait casting & spinning reels, 2 smaller electric line strippers, 1 for 14 lb and up the other for 10 lb and lower. There are several spools of spinner bait line and crank bait line and Fireline and Nanofil - enough to fill up whatever I need to fill up. Quote
