I know both are great reels but had a question. I know the 51E handles light lures beautifully, but is it good with normal sized baits as well? Say, upto about 3/8oz lures (spinnerbaits, etc)? If its not I was going to go with the E7. Your thoughts??

The 50/51 size is excellent for

"normal" size lures.

I fish 4 variations of the 50 sized platform. Anything from 3/16 to 3/4 oz works quite well. Never have found the need to have 200E instead of the 50 though I still have two 200e reels in the rotation. Plus the 50 series are slightly lighter and have more aftermarket upgrades should you need them. Also the resell value and demand for 50 series reels is slightly better in the event that you need to sell it.

I've seen people use it for pitching into heavy cover (50 size reels).  No worries.

I might get flamed but I was not a big fan of using my 50e for bigger lures namly 3/8 and above spinnerbaits. Bigger top waters or worms etc not a problem but spinnerbaits like I said something about it wasn't working for me. I got a Calcutta and reeling in spinner baits with that is butter.

The 50/51 platform will handle virtually everything aside from super heavy lures and those presentations that require a large line capacity. If you're interested in throwing 3/8 spinnerbaits I wouldn't worry at all about the 51E. That's actually what I would choose. I love the 51's.

I haven't got nearly the experience with my Scorpion 1001XT some of the other posters do. But I love the footprint of the 50 size, the way it handles, and it really is a great caster. In testing it out I've thrown top water, spinnerbaits, square bills, jerkbaits, and jigs. It does it all without an issue, but I haven't used a 200E in a very long time to compare. I will say, and this is just my opinion, I liked retrieving square bills better and was more comfortable with my Chronarch CI4+. That could be just bc I'm more used to that reel, the xship, the handle/knobs, or a combo of all 3.

As was said....just get both!

Despite have several Chronarch CI4+ reels and a Met I like that Scorpion enough that I'm itching to find an excuse to buy another one.

Get em both...done lol

Obviously a Tackletour member....and just as obvious.....the correct answer.  :teeth:

I don't have the Chronarchs in those sizes, but have the Curados.  Can't recall if I have thrown a 3/8 spinnerbait with a 51E...but probably have. I keep them on Medium power rods and usually throw 3/16 to 5/16 oz. spinnerbaits with them.  No problem.  Many people like the smaller reels for about everything.  I see no problem with a 3/8 oz. spinnerbait.

Looks like the 51E gets the nod. Thanks for the input! Trust me, if the budget allowed id definitely be getting both lol.

If the budget allowed, I'd get the Core

If you're throwing aerodynamic, well-casting baits that weigh over 1/2 oz (lipless, walking baits with a weight transfer, etc), you'll get more distance with the 201E. Below that, the 51E keeps up.

With spinnerbaits it's not about the weight as much as it's about the size of the blades. The 51e is ok with smaller blades but because it has such a short handle you do lose some leverage with resistent lures. I added a 90mm handle to my 51e to crank and you can definitely feel the difference. With that said I punch 3/4-1oz with my other 51e and feels just fine doing it.

My advice, get the 51, upgrade the gears to

7.0:1 and life is awesome.

FYI, Japan Tackle has the Shimano Brenious 7.7 gears in stock for the Core 50, XT1000 etc. Unfortunatly, all they have in stock right now is gear sets for left handed reels. They are $42.00 plus shipping.

Why do people like you tell me things like this!!!??

I am *TRYing* to justify things to my wife, and then

someone comes along and suggests higher gear

ratios.

LOL. Dadgummit, man! I frequent Japan Tackle, too.

Never noticed the gear section.

Doggonnit.

*PHEW* no right-handed gears in stock. I'm safe for now.

But as I think about it, the gearing is just a round

gear. Why is it "right or left". I mean, you should

simply be able to flip it over for either side.

Man, either my stupid is showing tonight, or I'm

on to something. Let's hope it's the latter. LOL
