matuka Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Just curious who uses tungsten weights specifically with or without inserts. Seems to be differing opinions on the merit of each. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 10, 2015 Super User Posted April 10, 2015 Without. If it needs an insert, it's poorly made. Quote
a1712 Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Light line fishing( 6-8lb.) I use an insert, above that it doesn't matter to me as long as they're well made. Brian. Quote
ABW Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 I used the ones that Siebert Outdoors has without the inserts and never had any problems. Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 10, 2015 Super User Posted April 10, 2015 The original tungsten bullet weights had major problems with sharpe surfaces and hole edges that abraided and cut line. Nylon tube inserts were added to resolve that problem. Aaron Martens made a utube video showing how to make inserts for tungsten weights. Today tungsten weight holes are polished to remove sharp surfaces and edges, if you trust the workmanship 100% then no reason to use inserts, if you are like me inserts add insurance it only takes 1 sharpe edge to cut your line. Slade House Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 I can tell you that if you are using tungsten weights while surf fishing on the beach you do not want inserts period, because they get all gunked up with sand and it sucks Quote
Alpha Male Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Im new to tungsten and some of the ones I bought have an insert already. They seem like they are good quality. should I be concerned? BTW I really like how small they are for the weight! Quote

Tom Some of the weights I have look a bit cheesy around the edges and I did put an insert in them ala Aaron Martens. Some say the insert decreases the angler's ability to feel the bottom. I not sure I agree. Quote
