What'd you catch him on? Were you bass fishing and caught him, or targeting them? Just curious because its hard to hook those guys, but anyways good fish!

I was in fact targeting bass when he hit. I pitched a jig into some pads and thought i had a great big bass!

I caught a 4 footer in upstate NY a few years back. Had it mounted and when I went to pick it up, the guy tried to make it look fatter than it was and ruined the fish. On the back side there was a gap of about 2 inches, and the lower fins were pointing out on it's side. Upset as I was I told him to keep it, I didn't want it.

Do you know what type of gar it was?

Long nose gar I believe. Didn't have those dark spots that yours has. More green in color. I earned the nickname Lucky that day. Caught the gar and a 20lb snapping turtle that day along with a mess of 4 foot 30lb Northern pike.

Nice gar !

I've caught quite a few down here.  Many times they get snagged on the side of the head while attacking the lure, as said they can be difficult to hook.  Very good strike, feels like cuda hit.

That's a cool looking gar. We have monster longnose gar around here that I'll catch on accident occasionally. I caught a big one last summer night fishing with a bladed jig. He hit it in a dock stall and ripped drag back under the dock. Lake I was on has monster bass, it was pretty disappointing when I saw it. A lot of fun to bowfish for too, had a 51 incher several years ago at the same lake.

Disappointing ?  Any time by accident catching a larger hard fighting fish or something out of the ordinary does nothing but get my juices flowing. The 50" fish I catch are not by accident, I target them.  Sure these fish are fun or I wouldn't be doing it, but so often I leave to go peacock fishing.  Catching 6# peacock is much more unusual, that's why I go fish for them.
