Greeting,

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a GLX 783C.  I plan on using it primarily for the following -  spinners, chatter and top water (poppers,  buzz, walking).  The occasional jig as well.

I was thinking of putting straight braid on it.  Maybe adding a mono leader when trowing topwaters.  Do you throw top waters on straight braid - I've heard of problems with this?  Thoughts?

Also what pound test - 30, 40, 50?

As always thanks!

Matt

I don't think you would have a problem with braid I'd probably go 30/40 depending on the reel. I have an imx 783 and use 12 big game I use it for spinnerbaits and larger top waters mainly super spooks.

I have the same rod.  I have tried braid and really didn't care for it.  It is a fantastic rod but braid seemed just weird on it.  I like 12lb Invisix, plain old Trilene XL, and Yo Zuri Hybrid.   My reel of choice with this rod is a Shimano Core 101MG.

As far as uses for this rod, anything really.  It is probably the most versatile rod I have ever used.  I have used it for just about every technique from crank baits to weightless soft plastics.  I especially like it for jerkbaits.

Enjoy....

Might ought to put a reel on it too.

Its nice to see some other sarcastic jokers around here.

In all reality I would go with braid and add a fluoro leader. no need for a mono leader

I have that exact rod that I use for spinnerbaits and topwater. It truly maybe the best spinnerbait rod out there (I like it even better than G Loomis's technique specific spinnerbait rods for spinnerbaits). As far as line goes, I like fluorocarbon for spinnerbaits, but fluoro sucks for topwater. I also tried braid and I just didn't like it with this rod. Therefore, I settled on Yo-Zuri Hybrid. It works great for both Spinnerbaits and Topwater and meshes well with that rod.
