Alpha Male Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I am in the market for a crankbait rod that will handle deeper crankbaits. I have a veritas Medium rod for crankbaits now and its gets overpowered by the medium to deep cranks. looking for suggestions for decent rods on the lower end of the price spectrum. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 9, 2015 Global Moderator Posted April 9, 2015 For deep cranks the 7' 8" Big Crankster St. Croix Mojo is a great rod. 1 Quote

I am looking into this as well. I'm considering the Phenix Glass rod in either 7'4 or 7'10. I think it might be the ticket for me this year. Looks like a sweet rod. $149 I think. I saw on Fish Ranger that you can get a Skeet rod for free if you buy another at $99. Two rods for $99!...The Mag Crank is 7'10 and free if you buy another rod. The spinnerbait/worm casting rod was an awesome spinnerbait rod for me when I had it. I may buy another and select the free cranking rod...why not. Good luck with your search! Quote

Thanks for all the replies. So here are the rods that I have been looking at: 1. Abu garcia Veritas Winch - MH 7'6" 2. St. Croix Mojo - MH7'0" Graphite 3. Cabelas Tournament ZX "Crankshaft" MH 7'5" Those above are the 3 primary ones due to the price Others I have considered are: 1. Fenwick Elitetech bass - MH 7'2" 2. St. Croix Premier - MH 7'0" 3. Powell Inferno - MH 7'0" I will start by saying that the last glass rod I had was a disappointment. It was a quantum and felt heavy and hollow. I dont know how better to describe it. That said what ever rod I buy will be at cabelas because I have 25$ off. So I will get a chance to get my hands on it so I will atleast get a feel for it so I am considering the mojo glass rod. Asife from length is there any other advantages glass has over graphite? Again thanks for your input. Quote
stkbassn Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 You have some good options there in your list. I've hear good things about those Cabela's rods so the 7'5 sounds like a good choice. The Veritas could be a good choice too. Not owning either I can't say that with any factual certainty of course. I've owned a lot of cranking rods from 7'6 -7'11 and most have been composite rods. The glass rods I've owned have been Lamiglas and I've loved them. I like the forgiveness in the glass rod and the flex that helps to keep a fish buttoned up with the trebles. However , I have enjoyed all of the cranking rods I've owned and had success with all of them from Powell, Castaway, American Rodsmiths, Lamiglas, Halo, and the list goes on. I like the longer rod for launching baits with ease...just my preference though! Good luck with your purchase and enjoy it! Quote
Cgrinder Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Do they have the Loomis E6X 847 CBR at Cabelas? Quote
Alpha Male Posted April 9, 2015 Author Posted April 9, 2015 Do they have the Loomis E6X 847 CBR at Cabelas? No they only have the "classic" actions. but at 180$ I would sooner go to TW and get the Fenwick Aetos cranking rod for 130$ Quote
fisherrw Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 phenix x11 or x13 is a sick rod for bigger cranks. a x10 or x12 is better for smaller ones Quote
jbh3 Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 If you have an Academy nearby, check out the 7'10" H2O Ethos "Magnum Cranker". Great rod for the $$, imo. Quote

Super User iceintheveins Posted April 9, 2015 Super User Posted April 9, 2015 The Halo Crankbait, 7'10" MH is a great choice I hear, and they even make an XH one for very big cranks. Quote
BaitMonkey1984 Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I have a 7 8 rick clunn wright McGill which i like but I don't think it is made anymore. The skeet Reese could be similiar I just purchased the W&M skeet reese crankbait rod and it has amazing feel to it- would recommend you check it out. Also, I lucked out and got mine for 50% on TW not too long ago while they usually retail for $100. Quote
