Scotty.C Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Iv'e been fishing a golf course with top water noisy baits, and have been gettin 2-4lb chunks, but only around 2 a trip. These trips have been 3-6 hours, so I'm looking for a way to increase my numbers. Do you have any lure suggestions? Im trying texas rigged lizards and buzz baits next. mcgreggor57 Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I fish GC ponds quite a bit. My strikes are coming on flukes, near what little cover there is, and shallow running crank baits. Ours don't have much visible structure but most of the ones I catch are either on the dam side or the spillway side on the opposite bank. Once the vegetation comes in, Texas rigged plastics, jigs and frogs work well in the slop. Welcome to the forums. 1 Quote

I like golf courses simply because most of the people who *might* be passively aware of it probably don't care that it's good fishing because they golf- but the courses want water views so they usually will cut right up to it if they can, providing access in many cases that would not be there otherwise. OP give some more info to help zero in on some suitable tactics! Do you have a kayak or are you fishing from shore? Lots of lily pads and veg or sandy/rocky bottom? How many acres is the pond? What kind of gear do you have to work with? It always helps to be as specific as possible when asking stuff on BR, as there are some EXTREMELY knowledgeable people on here but with only the bare basics in terms of information you may not get the type of response you are looking for. We are fish nerds and love to get into it so be as descriptive as you can about every pertinent detail so we can help you better. Quote
ksboy Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I usually use white spinnerbaits or small squarebill cranks. There's NO visible cover in the ponds I fish on the GC. Summer time I use buzzbaits with good results. Quote

I have a few nearby but think their kids will run me off the course if I ever tried fishing there. How do you got about getting permission, very interested in learning more... Quote

Some offer a good opportunity. IF you can find one that has access from the shore or nearby then you're good to go. I've never asked because I doubt anybody has even noticed lol Quote

primetime Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 When I first fish a Florida pond or golf course pond I always start with a 1/4 ounce lipless crankbait in Tilapia or baby bass color. If water is stained or tanic like many, something with chartreuse is always a good choice. If the fish do not get a lot of pressure they should hammer the lipless crank all day long. Once I find a good area or spot holding fish, I slow down and wake a J-9 size Rapala Jointed Floating Minnow or a small crankbait like the Strike King 1.0 size, and a fluke or trick worm should always work as well...Most Ponds have Tilapia as a major food source so if you are seeing deep craters which are tilapia nests (Tilapia are on the nests in many places right now, but they spawn up to 4x per year and most companies make a tilapia colored bait but all you need is a bait with white and blue in it). All the ideas above are options I would also suggest, lately I have been doing well with Red Shad and darker swirls like black and blue, and green pumpkin blue...Also, a 1/4 oz rooster tail spinner on light line is a killer in ponds as well....Good luck, sometimes you need to make multiple casts in the same area to get a big fish to strike, they will not usually move far to strike..... 1 Quote

offsidewing Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Oh man, golf course ponds. Grab A couple 4/0 owner hooks and a pack of 6 or 7 inch black ribbon tail worms. T rig weightless. Find the sizable ponds that have an above ground drainage pipe leading into them. Go the morning after a day or (preferrably) night of rain when water is pouring out of the pipe into the pond. Throw your worm into the swell and prepare for sore arms. If it's shallow at the swell, cast away from the swell in 2 foot increments until your worm gets smashed - then cast to that spot every time. 2 Quote

Most seem to be very uptight about their property and do not want anyone around except the golfers. I would love to give it a try, but have been shy about contacting any local courses. I would obviously act appropriately and keep the area clean and release all the fish, stay quiet, and out of the way. Just not sure they would want anyone around. If you got permission to fish on a golf course how did you go about it? Thanks. Quote

It ALWAYS came down to them worrying about getting sued if you get hit by a ball. I've offered to sign a waiver, but they would still be worried about being legally responsible for any accidents. Your best bet is to call around and ask respectfully. Better than just showing up and risking getting trespassed. 1 Quote
