I definitely feel everybody's pain here ~

Sometimes when I lose a decent one, I actually have to laugh and tip my hat.  Especially if the fish displayed a particularly high level of skill & creativity to earn it's freedom.

However, if & when it's a Big Fish and you know what I mean here . . .  It's NEVER FUNNY . . . .

EVER ! ! ! !

I usually just blurt out a curse word. Sometimes I'll just pretend it didn't happen and just go right back to casting, then mumble out a curse word a few casts later.

Mine is always "It was a short fish anyway"

My uncle hooked something large enough to snap 18lb braid and a pole in half in under 2 seconds, he goes "Ah, was just a fry anyways" as im leaning over the edge of the boat about to jump in after it

My usual response is, "that was a monster!" It is possible that some of those fish were not really monsters, based the on actual numbers of monsters caught...but lost fish can be as big as you want! A couple of years ago I lost a real trophy fish at the boat.I just sat and groaned for a few minutes before I could resume fishing.

Mine is usually Fudge, Jesus Mary and Josheph, or a word my mother would not have approved. Or godddd dangiitttt.

It really depends on weather it bust the surface of the water so the other person in the boat gets a look at it or not. If they see it was a dink then I'll say that's called catch and release. If they don't get a look, I'll say man that bass was huge, Did you see that thing?????  I must not have gotten a good hook set.

I don't have a word/s, but more like a slew of rather colorful words. But it's not like I am out there cussing like a sailor.

I growl at them usually.

That or they get the "There she wasn't/isn't" or "son of a!" you can tell how rough of a day it has been on whether I finish that one or just leave it at that.

I don't really remember what I say right when I lose a good fish but I know what my buddy says.  CALM DOWN AND QUIT THROWING YOUR RODS!!!!!!!!!! Then I go on and curse him and tell him to put the mother loving dip net down. Then I crank the boat up go about 5 yards turn off the boat and go back at it.
