Curado I "whining" When Casting

When I cast my Curado 200 I the spool makes a whining noise about half way through the cast. I turned off the brakes (I was using 1 internal and 3 external) and it did not seem to make the noise as bad (but I was getting backlashes). I was using a 3/4 oz spinnerbait and 10lb mono. What would cause this? This is my second outing. Other than that the reel worked great (except for casting a couple of my lures into the trees).

Take off the cover on the brake side and check the brake race- the flat surface that the brakes run on.  It may have too much or too little oil or may have some kind of crap in it.  Carefully wipe it clean and apply a VERY light touch of thin oil to it, I usually use a semi-soaked q-tip to wipe it on so it applies thinly and evenly.

 

Then go cast a bunch and see how it does.  Should clean 'er up.

Could also be spool bearings. I've had this howl noise from reels before and I add a drop of Ardent bearing oil to the bearing and it's stops.

It's the brake surface. A drop of oil and it will stop.

Brake noise is often misinterpreted as dry bearing noise. Keep the brake tabs and drum clean by swabbing with alcohol. When dry, apply a thin film of light oil to the drum and you'll be good.

Your reel should have come with a little fold-out "owner's manual" that has a picture of the brake drum and instructions on how frequently to oil it.

Well he said it only happens on the second half of the cast, so that would usually mean it was a brakes thing- if it was bearings it would probably do it all the time.  If it only makes noise when the brakes engage to slow the spool in the second half of the cast, it's probably just the brake race so that's why I said that.    

 

It's never a bad thing to flush and re-oil your bearings while you've got it all opened up though!

By drum, do you mean the spool?

Drum as the brass ring inside the side case. In the new Curado the drum was replaced with a cone but the same suggestions apply.

Yep, oiling the brake drum takes care of the squeal or whine.
