KevO Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 Anyone got some info about pickwick up around McFarland park? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 8, 2015 Super User Posted April 8, 2015 The Horseshoe is producing 5-6 lb smallmouth. Most of the fish have been in 5'-8' fow. Spinnerbaits and small soft plastic swimbaits are hot. I will be down there Saturday. Quote
KevO Posted April 9, 2015 Author Posted April 9, 2015 man that's what I like to hear. We decided to go to KY Lake now instead cause the water is so low in Pickwick and we we're worried the water would be too muddy. Quote
Surpriser Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Yeah, the water is indeed low. And it's too bad because there's plenty of stump fields that normally are loaded with bass this time of year, but there's just no water on them right now. That being said, there's still plenty of good fishing on Pickwick right now. I've been fishing south of the Natchez Trace bridge. Any spawning flat has a lot of fish in it, and if there's a laydown or stump, there will be a fish there at some point during the day. I've already broken my PB twice in the last 10 days. It's been a one-two combo for me....using fast-moving search baits in shallow water near the spawning flats will scare up a few bass. And throwing a jig or worm into wood cover in those same areas has been hugely successful. Pretty basic stuff, but it's resulting in some BIG bites. I've also noticed a significant decline in bites after 9am, so get at 'em early. Quote
MemphisFF Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 KevO report back on Ky lake...plan on being there next week Tuesday and Wednesday.. Quote
NITRO Z9 Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 Water isn't to muddy at Pickwick . Fish an bait has moved in creeks . Some half way in others have made it to the back . More larger fish seem to be getting caught that is last few years . I'v had 2 Smallies over 5 an 3 Lg over 6 an a bunch of 4 an up . Drop shot an Alabama seem to be hott tickets . 1 Quote
KevO Posted April 12, 2015 Author Posted April 12, 2015 KevO report back on Ky lake...plan on being there next week Tuesday and Wednesday.. Not much to report about. Very foggy in the morning at Birdsong water was stained to muddy and 66 degrees in the morning. It finally burned off about 8:30 and I took off to dry creek where I had planned on spending most of my day. Hit a submerged log or something almost as soon as I left birdsong. Didn't think anything about it as I've got an aluminum boat and the hit didn't seem that hard. Hardly felt anything at all really. Continued on to dry creek and fished for about an hour. Went to leave and the boat stood straight up like I was trimmed up to high but it finally laid over and I took off. Went about a mile, hit a wake and water shot up through my drain in floor. Shut it down, hit the bilge pump, looked in the back compartment and everything (battery, charger, oil tank) was completely submerged. Got it on plane again and headed back to the ramp, got it on the trailer and there is about a 12 inch crack right on the seam below the passenger seat. Caught 1 dink and crappie. Quote
unageo09 Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Water is supposed to be up to or near summer pool by midweek. Of course we're also supposed to get several inches of rain this week as well. Quote
unageo09 Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Just eyeballing it, looks like the river is finally up. I'm off next week, weather is supposed to break this weekend. Giddy Up! Quote

Man sorry to hear your bad luck, we fished some yesterday up near Paris and caught 5 water is muddy to stained also.. Fishing today and tomm also in the rain.. oh well it's better than work! Fish are kinda screwed up with this rain and cooler temps.. Quote
KevO Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 Yeah, I know a few people who fished KY over the weekend and it was tough for everyone. Quote
unageo09 Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 The water looked good today but motor issues forced us back to the ramp not long after launch. The only report I have is it will probably be the end of next week before the dealership can get to my boat. To top it off, next week is my vacation. So, those things happen. The tech said he'd try to work it in a little early if he could but they were backed up and being closed on Mondays doesn't play into my favor. Quote
Surpriser Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 The past few days have been a struggle. Not sure if it's the rising water, or maybe I only have myself to blame, but finding fish has been significantly more challenging compared to last week. I've been focusing on spawning areas, flats, and wind protected pockets. The only places I'm having any luck are where all the other fish (carp, gar, etc) are visually active spawning. The higher/rising water seems to have temporarily vacated most of the bass, as opposed to the bass being in there but not biting. Mid-day winds aren't helping, and makes the dawn/dusk the best time to find active bass. Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and swim jigs are about the only thing I can get to work; reaction bite > finesse bite, currently. I have a feeling the bass are just a day or two away from stabilizing again in the shallows, and some fun fishing to follow. Quote
unageo09 Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Ended up getting my boat back today, so hopefully should be good to go Monday. Will report back. People are catching a lot of crappie right now. Maybe I should go crappie fishing instead..lol. Quote
unageo09 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 First, I was surprised at how high the water had came up. Both Cypress Creek and Spring Creek were really muddy. The current today combined with the wind made for a less than optimal fishing conditions. Gonna launch from the Natchez Trace ramp tomorrow and try to find some places to get out of the wind/current. oldgolf4 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Fished partial days the last two days on Pickwick, launching at Yellow Creek and going as far north as Dry Creek. Didn't get out of Yellow the first day because of wind. No matter where we went, it seemed the wind followed us! Caught 15 or 16 both days, 90% on plastics. Caught a lot of dinks in edge of flooded timber along with one 4+. Water is now above average summer pool. Most of the water we fished was a little stained but was definitely not muddy. Quote
unageo09 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 We had better luck today getting out of the wind. Caught a few up in a little slough about 8-10 ft of water. We caught a couple catfish on crappie baits. I was surprised when the rod went straight down. I figured it was a stripe (white bass) the way it was pulling. Much better today getting out of the current and away from the wind. Quote
MemphisFF Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Fished Ky lake and yea the water is up esp visiting last week..caught em in the flooded stuff.. Caught a couple 5's and lot of small fish 1 Quote
