ThatZX14Fella Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 One, why aren't there more aftermarket parts for Quantum? And two, any tips for taking reels down for a cleaning? I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but the only reel I've taken apart was my mother's cheap Zebco spinning reel. It was having problems and she wanted me to try to fix it. I think my Accurist is overdue for a cleaning. I have the schematics sheet for it, just wanna know if there's anything I need to look out for. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted April 6, 2015 Super User Posted April 6, 2015 Make sure you don't loose any of the pieces. Quote
Penguino Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 they have an website that sells parts. Its called http://www.tackleservice.com/Consumer/CategoryListings.aspx?BrandID=6&CategoryID=30 . They pretty much have all the quantum parts for each of their reels for sale. Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted April 7, 2015 Super User Posted April 7, 2015 Spread out the loose pieces on a white towel or stick them in an egg carton. Losing them would be a bummer. Quote
Super User MickD Posted April 8, 2015 Super User Posted April 8, 2015 It is possible to take the reel apart only to the degree that you feel comfortable with and you will accomplish a lot with little risk. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, too, and used to take reels totally apart, but I don't do it any more. Reels are just too complicated and there is too much risk of losing parts or putting them back in backwards or getting it put back together and having some parts left over. Now I leave that total cleaning job to a pro, like DVT. But I do feel confident enough to just take them partially apart to my level of confidence, clean them, lube them, and put them back together. And that is usually sufficient. One thing to keep in mind is to take good care of your reels so that a total disassembly is not often needed. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 There are lots of free videos on the net, but I have yet to see one that is more than an interim type service like Mick described. In addition each model likely has a "gotcha" somewhere. The Quatums with the side plate latch built into the nose gaurd can be tricky. Everything needs to line up exactly to get it back in place. If you're not careful, the latch and spring will take flight upon removal of the nose piece. I'm not trying to make this out to be rocket science, but it's not a no-brainer either. DIY reel cleaning is doable. But so is changing the oil in a vehicle and the vast majority of people farm that out. If you DIY, take your time, lay stuff out in sequence, snap a pic here or there for future reference and leave a big enough window of time to complete the project. First time a couple hours is not out of the question. Let me know if you get stuck or have a question. If, on the other hand, you decide to send it, be sure to include your screen name and get 10% off labor. 1 Quote
