So im thinking about just useing braid with a floro leader but I want to know if braid is bad on your guides,if their is anything I need to know about braid tell me. Please help thanks

It doesn't hurt a thing. As long as the guides on your pole are inserted for braid. What kind of pole do you have?

Look and find out for sure and let us know. There should be a manufacturer and model on the blank. Also look at the guides do they have like a ceramic Insert in them? If it s st. Croix im sure it's fine

If it say HD-SC1 on it and FLW tour is it a st criox

what? Doubtful.

If it is an SCI instead of SC1 then it is possibly an S-glass rod.  Look at your guides, are they stainless looking?  As long as they aren't plastic you should be fine.  Odds are you will be fishing lighter braid in the 10-15lb size with light topshots of FC in 6-8lb which you aren't going to have a lot of drag on your guides.  Just make sure they aren't plastic.  Other then that I'd say you're probably safe to use braid.

If you search HD-SC1 spinning rod on google st criox rods are the first things that come up

I'm sorry man I live in Florida. I'm a long ways off from Ya. Isk what the waters like there. If the water is very clear visibility some say a leader can't hurt

I've never seen a plastic guide, can you show me one?  The cheapest inserted guides are capable of handling braid without grooving.  The cheapest tiptops may not be, but  they are inexpensive and a piece of cake to replace if you find grooving.  But the cheapest tiptops may groove with mono or flouro, too, due to the dirt in the water being carried by the line.  Bottom line, in my opinion, is to not sweat it, and at the end of every year check your tiptop.

Unless you really need high breaking strength, try braid of good quality (name  brand, Power Pro and Suffix are very good) and no higher test than 15, and you'll be amazed at how easily it  casts and handles, twist doesn't usually bother  it (put it on the reel correctly, like your owner's manual describes).  If you want to use a flouro leader (some do not and seem to catch fish fine) keep in mind it can sink fast enough to screw up the action of some surface lures.  Use a good line to line knot, double uni or Alberto knots work well and are not hard to tie.  Keep in mind  that both need to be tied correctly or you'll get failures.  Just do a google search for the knot name and you'll find some very good instruction sites.

FWIW ... 3 years of using braid on my spinning and so far ...

1 - No wear on the guides.  Seem just as smooth.  I use Super Slick.  Trying Smackdown.

2 - I up'd the size from 10lb test to 15lb test in year 2 and never looked back.  Better knots with leaders IMO.

I have two Phlueger President spinning reels that I can only use braid.

Anything else just twists so bad I can't even fish.

For Norfolk and Bull you'll want a fluoro leader for sure. I've converted most of my spinning reels to braid/leader setup, it was a great decision. Your rod will be fine. I've got braid on rods from Legend Tournaments to Ethos, none of them are damaged/effected by the braid.

youll also need to spool a little bit of mono or fluoro on your reel first, just enough so it covers your spool backing, then use a double uni or blood knot to tie your lines together and then you can spool the rest of your spool with braid. if you didnt have a a backing the braid would slide around on the rod almost like you have no drag at all. also if you have a graphite rod loosen your drag a bit or else you might snap your rod because braid has no stretch. good luck!

In clear water like bull shoals I would for sure use a mono or floro leader. A double uni works well. The sensitivity of the braid is great. I have had to replace my tip before because of the braid cutting into it

Backing isn't necessary to avoid braid slipping on the spool, putting electrical or masking tape on the spool first is all that's needed.  Whether I use backing or not I still put tape on first, even braid ready spools.

Guys,

This is really helpful.  I'm thinking about spooling my Shimano Sedona 2500FD with braid after pairing it with a Lightning Shock Rod.

My reservation is that I don't really fish heavy cover so I don't want it to be overkill.  Advice on using it but not fishing heavy cover regularly?  A buddy of mine swears by it and we generally fish the same areas.

I fish it in open water all the time. It's not just for the heavier pound test aspect, I can also launch a bait a long ways and still be able to set the hook without a ton of extra effort.

That lightning rod will sing with the braid. My boy has it on his and it can be noisy with that guide. Another thread was talking about it being loud on a ghost rod. But I do prefer braid on spinn gear
