hoosierbass07 Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 I just got bank fishing at a nice city park pond that the state stocks trout in and bass. They usually stock the trout in early March. So in early March I discovered kastmaster spoons and how effective they are for trout. The only problem is that when I cast them out I immediately real them back in so the treble hooks don't stag anything. So I can't really stop and go and let it sink for a bit. I'm always working it. Today I tried something different. I had a Ned Rig on my six pound line rod. I had this on for bass fishing (I've not caught my first bass yet this year) but I decided I would leave the Ned Rig on and see if any bass would bite it. I have never used the Ned Rig before. To my surprise the second cast I caught a trout. Then more bites. Then another trout that jumped off the hook at my feet. Then another trout that I landed. For about one hour and thirty minutes of bank fishing I landed three trout with more bites. I let them all go though, I'm only into catch and release. The cool thing is that all the trout were hooked in the upper lip. What I did was cast one out and let it sink. Wait a few seconds. Then make two turns of the reel handle and stop. Then repeat. Over and over. The soft plastic I was using was a Z-Man ZinkerZ in Dirt color. I cut it in half and put it on a Gopher jig head with an exposed hook. The hook was red colored. I'm not sure if that helped the trout see and go after it or not. Anyway, it was fun using this lure and I can't wait to catch some bass on it. I'll have to wait and see how it does with bass but I get the feeling this could go right up there with Texas Rigged Senkos/soft stick baits as a great way to catch bass. Also, I noticed it was pretty easy for the trout to hook themselves on that exposed hook. I wonder if I should start running exposed hooks on my soft plastics for bass. Something I'll have to try and experiment with. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 5, 2015 Global Moderator Posted April 5, 2015 Ned Kedhe and his cohorts do what they call "Bass fishing for trout", around here this time of year. Most of their escapades on on Lake Shawnee in Topeka, KS. I also fish the same lake because they stock monster trout (at least 600 over 4 pounds each year and the previous 5 state records before the current one ranged from 10-15.5 pounds all came from that lake). I primarily use more standard trout lures like a Little Cleo or micro jig under a bobber. However, I had some new hooks on my homemade jigheads I wanted to try along with the Zman TRD that I had yet to fish. I caught 15-20 trout on it and could have caught more I'm sure if it wasn't for the fact that I was doing better with a Little Cleo on the bigger fish. Quote
Kevin22 Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 I've been slaying the trout on a local stocked lake. They put 1500 trout in it, 40 acres I think it is, and I've already caught over 300 in one week of fishing. I reeleased them of course for the kids to catch. Just walking around with a spinner catching trout/bass/crappies, then when I find the school I slow down with an ice jig and maggots left over from ice fishing, under a tiny ice bobber. Works great for trout and catch quite a few bluegills and crappies as well. Everyone else I've seen really struggle to catch their 5 fish (keeping them, 5 fish limit). Its all about locating them in the stocked lakes though. They group up and run the shorelines early then the thermoclines when the water warms. They'll hit about anything that will fit in their mouths as long as it is presented correctly. Quote

Check out my post^^ I use the exact same thing for bass and trout. 1/16oz mushroom head with a TRD or half a Zinker. PB&J, pink, white, coppertruese, purple haze, color seems to be less important than putting it in front of them. Check out the Ned rig sticky at the top of the Fishing Tackle forum for all the information you need about fishing them for bass. 1 Quote
