bassinnoobie Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Well im home schooled and my mom is awesome because she didnt make me write about some dumb Egypt stuff but what i love fishing. I got most of this from this web site and KVD's spring classic sale seminar. so tell me what you guys think not on a teacher level but fisherman to fisherman and if any of my info was wrong so here it is BASS IN THE SPRING In this article I will be talking about the bass spawn and bass behavior in the spring. You will also learn about the different stages of spring which are Prespawn, Spawn and Post-Spawn, and what lures can catch spring bass. So lets get into it. THE PRESPAWN This point of Spring is called PreSpawn, this is real early Spring. At this time of spring this bass start to move toward shallower water once the water hits about 45 to 50 degrees. In the PreSpawn the bass are very hungry because of spending the whole winter in deep water, so the bass cruise the banks eating lots of blue gill, crawfish and shad. So blue gill colored crankbaits, swim jigs, spinner baits and swim baits work well. For crawfish imitations: crankbaits again, Texas rigged craws and beavers, jigs and even dragging craw colored spinner baits work well. For shad.... well again crankbaits, spinner baits, swim baits, jerkbaits, Etc. The bass also look for mates and calm places to make beds for spawning while they are shallow in the Spring, The word shallow can depend on the lake you are fishing, take for instance a lake in Florida, deep winter holes may be only 10 to 15 feet and the bass may spawn with their backs out of water. While lakes as such as Table Rock Lake, winter holes can be 60 to 120 feet deep and bass may spawn in 12 feet of water. How deep bass spawn will depend on depth of your lake and water clarity. So in review of PRESPAWN, what bass do is eat eat and eat and get ready to spawn. After Prespawn we have whats called the Spawn. THE SPAWN OK, Prespawn is over, and the bass very Very VERY BIG, FAT, And mean. The place you will find spawning bass is off of creek channels that run next to the bank, but you will find them on spawning flats next to the creek channels that the bass use to travel. These spawning flats are most likely old fields if you are fishing man-made lakes. When bass are on their beds they are even meaner because bass eggs and fry are on the menu for everything including blue gill, lizards, crawfish and frogs, so the bass have a hard job of protecting the eggs. So lures that work for bedding bass are blue gill colored lures, Texas rigged craws and beavers, lizards, and jigs. So to make sure to get best chance of survival for as many bass as possible both the male and female protect the bed. While of the bass runs things off that try to eat the eggs the other one fans the eggs to keep the bed clean and airats the eggs. So basicly during the spawn protects the eggs and keeps the bed clean. Now after the spawn its the post-spawn, now we will get into that. POST-SPAWN This is late Spring or Post-Spawn, While the male bass are off their beds, their job for spring isn't over yet. For up to another 2 weeks the male bass still has to protect the fry from: blue gill, crappie, and even other bass, so the bass' job is even harder then while on the bed because he has to protect the fry while going after atleast a week without a meal except for the occasional blue gill or crawfish that dared to come close to the bed. Once the bass fry disperse the buck can finally get his first meal In up to 3 weeks.. Well thats the bass spawn now thats over bass eat their health back then go into the creek channel where the water is cooler and stay there until fall where they will feed up for the winter. Well thats Spring for a bass, seems pretty tough for everyone involved but bass are still around. In review prespawn is when the bass move shallow and feed up for the spawn. The Spawn is when bass are on beds protecting the eggs from blue gill, lizard, and crawfish. And Post-Spawn is the end of spring when the bass fry disperse and bass start thair summer pattern. 3 Quote
