gunsndrums1 Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 So my cousin gave me this very large 41/2 inch jitterbug that weighs something like an ounce and a quarter, pretty big bait has 3 treble hooks. So apparantly this is for bigger fish like pike and Muskie, but I know that bass will eat big baits. Is this just too big a bait to fish? I feel as though the only bass that could really fit in their mouth all the way would be a 5+ pounder. Catching pigs like that doesn't happen nearly as much here up north so would it even be worth fishing it for bass? FYI it is In fire tiger and it appears that my cousin never used it or caught anything with it because it is in brand new condition without any scratches on it and the hooks are still very sharp. MDBowHunter Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 I've seen one and two pounders hit bigger lures then that. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Yea they will eat it. Bonus pike and muskies are a blast too, and you should get quite a few, especially with the bright color. Quote
gobig Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Two pound bass will have no trouble eating it. I catch quite a few in the two pound class every year on baits 8 inches and larger. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 3, 2015 Global Moderator Posted April 3, 2015 I've got one in black that has been crushed a bunch of time by 1-2 pound fish. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted April 3, 2015 Super User Posted April 3, 2015 I have a black one that I bought for night fishing. Have never caught a fish on it but have had a few big explosions . Quote
Dogmatic Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 People have to stop thinking that a bait might be "too big" for bass. Bass are voracious predators, and will try and eat anything, with in reason...and sometimes not reasonable at all... 1 Quote

Bass also don't have mirrors to look into and have no idea how big they actually are. Only way they can find out if they can eat something is to try. 1 Quote
corn-on-the-rob Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 I found one of that sized jitterbugs in my grandpas tackle box and took it up the street to my local pond just to see how it worked. This pond has small fish so I wasn't expecting much. Start throwing it around and bam huge explosion, I wait a second, set the hook... then I bring in an 8........ inch bass. the trebles were so big on this bait one treble could barely fit in this things mouth. This pond it is a miracle to catch a bass 12 inches but was super excited when I got bit. 3 Quote
fishangdood Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 Bluegills will nip at your bait like it would on a shiny, small, bare hook or pretty much anything. I still count them as a catch as a last resort. Quote
sprint61 Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 I cought something huge on one once! Me and my girlfriend was in the river in a small jon boat musky fishing and I was whizzing one as hard as I could cause it was a little light for my Rod. I was looking at my target and I heard SMACK I looked and it was buried in her head. Had to go the ER and get it cut out. So yea they work. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 4, 2015 Super User Posted April 4, 2015 Musky Jitter Bug are good at dusk, the 1/2 before and after sunset when terrestrail critters like frogs, mice and rats are active. Change the hooks to hang on split rings for strike to hook set ratio. Tom Quote
