beenreelsince94 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 I am trying to compare both the Veritas and the Mojo for bass fishing. I own two Abu Garcia Veritas rods and I love them but my buddy advised me to take a look at the St Croix Mojo. Any experiences or opinions on them? By the way I would be using the rod with an Abu Garcia Revo reel of some sort. -BeenReel Quote
ColdSVT Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Both are solid sticks...i like the cork on the mojo bit the veritas blank is better imo Id sacrifice the cork for the better blank in a quick second In that price point also check out the ***, fenwick elite, and the powell ( cant remember its name but is low 100s) and loom at the croix premier for a few bucks more i never did learn to like my mojo bass that i got a few years ago. It was replaced with a *** Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted April 2, 2015 Super User Posted April 2, 2015 They are both good rods and i have both in fact I liked the Veritas so much more that I went out and bought 2 more. The Mojo.s are a bit tip stiff and the Veritas has a better feel and a bit more play in the tip. Quote
Kevin22 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 I have both, I like the veritas much better. The mojo is just too heavy weight wise, and very tip heavy. Good spinnerbait rod though. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted April 3, 2015 Super User Posted April 3, 2015 I'm a St Croix freak, but not a fan of the Mojo. I'll just bite my tongue on the Veritas so this thread doesn't get locked. IMO, look elsewhere. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 3, 2015 Super User Posted April 3, 2015 I have owned both. Currently I use the Veritas. Better bang for the buck, and while St Croix's warrenty is fantastic, Pure fishing is a little better....no sending in the rod, just send them a picture of the damage and a picture of the receipt and your new rod is at your door in a couple of days for $10 s/h. fisherrw Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 I would go with a phenix maxium or a *** *** black or green Quote

ThePackMan Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 I have 3 Veritas, and like them, but at that price point take a look at the Duckett Ghost or ***. Quote
Boogey Man Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Out of the 100 dollar market, I think St. Croix is being left behind. Between the Veritas, CarbonLite, ***, etc, there are many other good rods out there. I bought a Mojo a while back, it was the Medium 6'6" Topwater/Jerkbait rod (I think lol), it was a well built quality rod, but was just too tip heavy and unbalanced for me. I returned it. I have a 6'6" medium Veritas and Carbonlite for comparisons. Quote
Super User CWB Posted April 3, 2015 Super User Posted April 3, 2015 Veritas 2.0. Didn't like the feel of the Mojo. 1 Quote

I can vouch for Pure Fishing - I snapped the tip of one of my Veritas last year in my tailgate. I emailed them a copy of my reciept with a picture of the broken rod. They sold me a new one for far less than retail, which is fine, I wouldn't expect warranty coverage for my stupidity.... Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted April 3, 2015 Super User Posted April 3, 2015 No Sense to bite your tong, elaborate.I'll let the picture speak. This is a batch of repairs one guy brought in. Note how many Abu rods are there. All of these Abu rods, minus the Villain, have been in for repairs before. They have a serious guide issue that needs addressed. I don't know what rod at that price point is for you, but I know where my money wouldn't be going. And some will come along and say they should have been turned in and replaced under warranty. Maybe they should have, but I ask, why not just put good guides, or at least, better guides on in the first place? In stead of charging $10 or $20 or whatever for warranty, why not put $5 of that up front and put guides on that won't keep breaking? At this rate, in another year or 2, these rods will have a full set of Alconites! Sorry about that tangent/rant. I just hate when companies put crappy components on rods. Quote
Kevin22 Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 Id tell the guy to stop stepping on his rods on the deck. 2 Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted April 4, 2015 Super User Posted April 4, 2015 Id tell the guy to stop stepping on his rods on the deck. Oh, there is way more to it than that. This is just the Abus from one guy. I fixed 8 or so last year for other people. Funny thing, of the thousand or so Alconite, SiC, and even the lowly aluminum oxides I've wrapped, I've NEVER had to replace a single one. I'd be willing to bet, just from the repairs of Pure Fishing rods alone over the last few years, I was able to pay for my Alps power wrapper. Quote
guitarglynn1 Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 Veritas 2.0. Didn't like the feel of the Mojo. 2.0 is my go to rod right now Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted April 6, 2015 Super User Posted April 6, 2015 I'd say get the mojo, I have one and like it. Recently broke it but it was replaced under warranty no questions asked. Quote

Thanks, I wasbt being a smart ellec just wandering. I will admit the first series had problems. Have you looked at the 2.0? Made a lot better. 1 Quote
Blues19 Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I have a 7' MH in both the Veritas and Mojo. I prefer the Veritas much more. The Veritas is lighter and more sensitive in my opinion. The Mojo feels more solid like it will hold up longer (heard a lot about Veritas rods breaking) but I have had a veritas for 2 years with no issues and another one I got last year. I prefer the Veritas, but that is just me. There are a handful of really nice $100 rods out there, including the BPS Extreme and Carbonlight and the *** ***. I would recommend though, if you like the Veritas, why change? 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted April 7, 2015 Super User Posted April 7, 2015 I've never fished a veritas, but I do own a mojo. I don't care for the feel of it either. I tried it for jigs, cranks, and spinner baits. Had it paired with a curado, but it always felt heavy in the tip. Might try a round reel on the mojo later on, and see how that feels. Quote

That was my #1 complaint with my Mojo's too, and my split grip Legend Tournaments as well, my Avids and older full grip LT's were much better balanced with the smaller reels I used on them. NO DOUBT they are built with more attention to detail and better components than the Abu rods I am using now, I have said so many times. One of the reasons I sold my St Croix's was simply boredom, I fished them for 4-5 years and wanted to try something else. I also had a morbid curiosity with "let's see how inexpensive of stuff I can use and still catch fish" and so far my plans have not back fired. Quote
