gall Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 i have a couple questions about it i want to get into kayak fishing since i do a lot of river and crik fishing and mainly wade it and this one seems pretty good for a decent price i mean from what i read you can stand in it but i was wondering if anyone owns one and if they do how do they like it? also i was wondering how easy would it be to add accessory rails to it since it doesnt have any and lastly if anyone does own one how easy is it to build a cart for it Quote
boostr Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 I've researched this yak for a while. It has its problems with some of the yaks having the scuppers leak into the body cavity, and the seat coming loose. They have simple fixes for these issues if you search the google or the YouTube. Other than that people liked them after these fixes at the price point. I don't know if I would take it on a river with minor rapids though. There is a dude on you tube doing it, and he had a tough time of it. It might be better to save a couple more Bens and get the fs128. Quote
MikeJames Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 I just bought an fs12t Saturday, I looked it over pretty well before I bought it because of the issues boostr stated. The scuppers looked good and I took it out for a few hours on Sunday and didn't have a problem with leaks. It was bone dry after about 4 1/2 hours on the water. The seat issue was the bolts on the sides would bend because the back of the seat frame didn't rest against the kayak, it was kind of suspended. They fixed the issue, it should be ok. The seat is also way more comfortable then the seat in my Tarpon 120. It's fairly easy to stand up in but I am going to add a standing assist strap, the fs12t doesn't come with one but the fs128 does. It tracked pretty well even though it was a little windy. You should have no problem at all adding accessory rails. It came with the kayak, seat and 6 scupper plugs. There is only 2 carry handles (front and back) so I added handles to the sides. Quote
gall Posted April 1, 2015 Author Posted April 1, 2015 thanks guys and i was planning on doing the same thing with the pull up strap if i did get it i mean i like the 128 but the thing is just massive Quote
FATYAKKER Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 I bought the FS12T a couple months back. I have had it out a couple times and mine has no leaks. It tracks pretty well but not as good as some because of how wide it is. You can stand in it with practice I'm 5'10 215 lbs. I wouldn't stand if the wind is blowing very hard though. The seat is comfortable and seems to be fine mechanically. Overall I'm happy with the purchase and the price I paid. Quote
boostr Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Well, it looks like they might of fixed these issues. That's a good thing. Quote
Crutch Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 I just put in an order to pick this up and a couple other things at my BPS in Portage. After researching I know of the issues this has had but at the price point and how easy they are to fix I'm not worried about it. I looked at the 128 as well, but with it being almost 100 pounds with the seat I just didn't want it. I am car topping this and I am 23, and I lift regularly, but that is just an excessive amount of weight to be moving around as often as I will go fishing.  I'll be picking this up next week and can't wait to get it on the water! 1 Quote
gall Posted April 2, 2015 Author Posted April 2, 2015 thanks guys i mean anyone have the 128? im curious i mean the thing is huge and the crik i fish in isnt that wide but the sesquhanana has some wide areas so if you were me what route would you taje Quote
yakingfisherman Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 thanks guys i mean anyone have the 128? im curious i mean the thing is huge and the crik i fish in isnt that wide but the sesquhanana has some wide areas so if you were me what route would you taje I have the 128t. My advice, don't buy it. The hatches are horrible. The front and back hatch are pretty much impossible to open. They require handles on them just to get them to open. The two hatches are too far away to even get them if you are in the yak. Everything leaks and will require you to seal them up. The rod holder that comes with it is useless as it gets in the way of paddling. Took it off and installed a scotty further up away from my paddling. It is a beast to paddle and horrible in the wind. The stock paddle holder also sucks. A regular bungee cord system would be much better. The area I fish has no current so it tracks decent becuase of that. Not sure how it will handle in the river. It does not glide well. You will have to put effort to make it move in the water. It also is just ridicously heavy. I doubt that the yak only weighs 84lbs without the seat. Feels way heavier and I am no weak guy by any means. It's a pain to haul this thing back to my car after a day of paddling and to put it on my roof rack. Also it has no side handles but you will need them if you carry the kayak by yourself. Â I mean the kayak is not all bad. I actually only spent $450 on it and got the wheels and a bb sunrise paddle with it from a buddy of mines. A great deal but spending full price on this yak is not worth it. I am glad I got the deal from my buddy because I was actually going to buy one for retail. I only had it for less than a year and already have plans to upgrade to another yak before this year ends. It is not all bad though. It does allow you to stand up and fish and it does have a lot of room. The middle hatch and one directly behind you can store some stuff and is reachable. But honestly, if you are looking to buy this yak I advise you to spend a little more money and get a better one. Quote
gall Posted April 3, 2015 Author Posted April 3, 2015 see i looked at the reviews and the same complaints with the leaking but everyone has also mentioned ways that it can be fixed and im 23 and money doesnt grow on trees for me as much as i would love to buy a ws or something nice like that its just not gonna happen Quote
yakingfisherman Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Im 21 so I fully understand the money part. The fs12t is a good buy at its price point. What im saying is I dont think the extra money for the fs128t is going to be that much different from the 12t. Quote
gall Posted April 3, 2015 Author Posted April 3, 2015 thank you finally someone young who understands i went to bass pro today bad idea btw but  i was looking them both over ad i feel like the 12t will be the one 1 Quote
RedskinsFisher Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 I was looking at these for a while and finally decided to get the 12T. Told my buddy and he was selling his 128 he bought last year for 500, it was too heavy for him to cartop. I bought that one, just got it out on the water on Sunday. Really stable, i sealed up the hatches and where the connections are in the scupper holes bc he said it leaked and i got no water in it. I'm 25 and have a pickup so the weight isnt an issue, but it is really heavy. I would have passed on it if i had to cartop it. Its my first kayak, and after one day on the water I like it alot. But if i was paying full price I would have gone with the 12T. Both seem like a great way to get off the bank, 12 is just less expensive and lighter Quote
kikstand454 Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 If you have a place nearby that rents kayaks, you can EASILY get a nicer kayak used for that money. Rental fleets are typically restocked with every new model year- and they sell off the old models at absurd prices. Example- my buddy got a 15' OK prowler for $400. It was in barely used condition. Just an fyi. Quote
gall Posted April 9, 2015 Author Posted April 9, 2015 wow i acutally do have a place that have the ws and all that good brands thanks for the tip ill have to go check them out 1 Quote
Rhino68W Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 If you are going to be fishing moving water I would STRONGLY look into a FS10. They are lightening fast. I have a 2015 FS12T and love it, but I only fish small lakes and slow moving rivers. If that's what your targeting then you'll be fine, but anything with a moderate current I would check a FS10. It is big and bulky. Very comfortable to fish out of. Not as nimble as smaller yaks. I equipped mine with a trolling motor as I found paddling it to be quite a chore. For the money it was awesome. I also bought an old jet ski trailer to haul it for about 200 bucks. Quote
gall Posted April 11, 2015 Author Posted April 11, 2015 most fo the river and crik are very very slow moving water luckily Quote
Beebe138 Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Does anyone have any experience with the 12t in Salt water? I.e. Going through the surf to paddle out bait or in marsh looking for reds? I would also be using in lakes and rivers. Quote

On the positive side, it's very stable, accepts a transom mount trolling motor straight away, has an all day comfortable seat, and less the leaking hatch, is a great entry level fishing kayak.  You can get out the door with it, a PFD, and paddle for under $1,000. As far as transporting it, yes, it's big.  I have a scupper cart and load it on my truck's ladder rack by placing the stern on one of my rubber floor mats and levering it onto the rack with a bear hug. I've heard Ascend remedied the known issues.  I hope so, because without the leaks and binding hatches, it's a great fishing kayak. Also, it's made here in the US, so while it's got its issues, keeps a number of folks employed. Quote
Preytorien Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I looked at a lot of less-expensive kayak options for fishing. I went with a Vibe Skipjack 90 Inexpensive. Fishing friendly features. Low weight. Checked all the boxes for me Quote
