I live in Central Florida and I have gotten pretty big into bass fishing, although I being a student I don't have the budget to buy all the rods and reels that I need for different techniques. That being said I am fishing two rods. I have a 7ft medium spinning rod and then a 7ft MH baitcaster that I use the most. I primarily throw Texas rigged soft plastics with the baitcaster and I want to know what kind of line I should have on this rod that I can use with the most different techniques. I want a line that I can fish soft plastics and jigs with as well as a top water frog from time to time and topwater hard baits and chatter baits. Obviously I know there is not one perfect line but if you were limited to one rod like I am what line would you go with? Also if the answer is braid with a fluorocarbon leader do I need to match line diameters or can I use a 12lb fluoro leader with 30lb braid even though they are not the same diameter? Any advice about line is greatly appreciated! Quote
The Next KVD Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 I would use 30 to 50lb braid with 40 being the sweet spot for just about everything. If you need a fluorocarbon leader you can use any diameter line you need to get the job done. I use an alberto knot to tie my leaders to my braided main line. 2 Quote
bass raider Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 since you'll be using it for topwaters too that eliminates fluorocarbon since it sinks.so that leaves braid and mono.for mono I use 15lb. on my casting gear and 8 or 10 on my spinning gear when I use braid its usually 40 or 50 on my casting rod& 15 or 20 on my spinning rods.if your fishing from the bank& you fish around a lot of snags I would go with mono,its a little more abrasion resistant&if you get snagged you can easily break 15 or 10lb mono.you can also use braid with a leader if youre fishing from the bank.i cant tie leader knots worth a crap soif you can tie good knots then braid with leader would be the way to go imo.braid will last longer and be more sensitive than mono but not as abrasion resistant.leader to braid size doesn'tmatter you could use 12lb. mono to 20lb braid if you wanted to. 1 Quote

Tmmytomato Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 I'm in agreement with the responders who use no leader and tie straight braid to the lure. If you're in tannic water it shouldn't matter much anyway. The diameter of braid is tiny compared to mono. NO fluoro if you're fishing topwater because it will sink and crawl your bait towards you even if you think it's sitting still/deadstickiing. There's only a couple braids that sink, one being Sufix 832 (excellent line by the way), so I'd probably stay clear of that one. If you're fishing Florida sinking line probably isn't necessary anyway because your "deep" is our (Colorado) shallow to mid depths. Years ago all any of us had was mono and somehow we caught a pretty fair amount of fish so I'd use it as my standard go-to line if I could afford only one type. 1 Quote
