annexation Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 This is a great opportunity for us Michigan anglers! Not that it does anything about the ice, though. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 30, 2015 Super User Posted March 30, 2015 Personally - I'd be in favor of a year round catch & release bass season here in MI. Â However, that article is dated back on 22 March and I think this proposal has already been rejected, for this season at least. Â Â But I may have "Mis-Remembered"Â . . . . . . . . . Â A-Jay Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted March 30, 2015 Super User Posted March 30, 2015 If this report is correct, the NRC shot it down. Has a Kim Stricker Hook'N Look video also: http://www.freep.com/story/sports/outdoors/2015/03/22/lydia-lohrer-fisheries-order-upended/25176389/ Â -T9 Quote
Cgrinder Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Yeah the catch and delayed release thing for tournament anglers made me hesitant. Moving catch and immediate release up to April 1 would be cool. Year round would also be neat but as you said, icy. Quote
lecisnith Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Yeah, I'm all for immediate catch and release year round. It seems like the issue of that particular option being detrimental to spawning smallies is a bit of a fallacy. If they were worried about keeping fishing pressure down during the spawn that would mean not having a season until July. Especially in the northern part of the state, bass spawn through June. I feel like the only way to realistically limit damage to the fishery is catch and immediate release until the end of May, anyway. The wording of "year-round season" is misleading, as well. Who's fishing for bass in December-March most years? Nature gives us a closed bass season, I think that's enough. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted March 30, 2015 Super User Posted March 30, 2015 Soooo much in the article and in the petition that made me want to yell..... Quote

Like, can I take it home, stock my pond with them, and re-release them in a few years? If they're going to make a new law, make it as clear as possible with as little opportunity for interpretation as possible. 1 Quote
MichiganBass80 Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 First off, that article is dated March 22nd, from what I have gathered from all of this that has been going on for a while now, it that the NCR doesn't gain the authority to vote and change anything until the 31st, meeting and possible vote to change to the seasons is next week on the 9th. The NRC Did however order that the DNR write up another recommendation without th CDR part. As to the tournament part of the changes, again from what I have read and understand, is that most people, including the writer of that article are not worried about the entire state waters, they are all lake st Clair people who don't want "their" waters messed with. I believe there is/was another meeting in Grandville today. Will be interesting the hear what was said and how it went.Honestly I'd be happy with just catch and release year round, and I think in the end we'll get at least that, which will include lake St Clair. They have a chance to vote on the 9th, hopefully I'll be out fishing on the 10th 3 Quote

Super User gulfcaptain Posted March 31, 2015 Super User Posted March 31, 2015 Well that is one state I'll check off my list of places NOT to move. Â Not only do you get froze out and iced over, when it does thaw you can't fish bass. Â Quote
lecisnith Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Well that is one state I'll check off my list of places NOT to move. Not only do you get froze out and iced over, when it does thaw you can't fish bass. All you had to do was read through the forum thread to know that that is changing, literally, in ten days. Secondly, Michigan is a pretty awesome state in which to live. If you have the testicular fortitude to deal with a little bit of snow and actual cold temperatures (rather than thinking that 32 is actually freezing) you get to enjoy eight months of the most spectacular weather in the world and the scenery that comes with. We have seas, we have pine forests that rival northern California, we have rock formations that can match the ones in Utah and whatnot, we get temperatures that would make someone in Florida or Louisiana feel at home for a month or so, at least. It's also one of the top beer states in the country. What other reason could you want? Oh, we're also virtually natural-disaster-free, save for the very, very rare tornado. Quote

LunkerFisher Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 I've been searching online for days trying to find more information about this possible change. There's a lot of open water here in SE Michigan and I want to get out on the water with all my bass gear. Some of my friends say to just "play dumb" but I can't in good conscience target bass when they're out of season. Closest I can do is crappie fish and pray for a bass. We really do need a year-round catch and release bass season, like was mentioned before the ice is enough to deal with. Jigging through a hole ain't quite the same as casting for me. 1 Quote
Gamblerman Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 I agree with Lund Explorer. Michigan has enough rules about seasons when it come to hunting and fishing... Open bass all year round is my vote! Quote
RoushBasser Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Have my boat ready to go....too bad I will probably still be able to play hockey on the 10th haha. Quote

I did, and if I miss read it since it sounded like it might have been scrapped but if I'm wrong I have no problem admitting it.  I know you guys have a great fishery up there and to be able to CR bass year round (other then when you can drive your truck on the lake) that is awesome as I'm sure some winters end earlier then others.  I didn't say it wasn't a great place to visit, but I don't do cold. Did it growing up in the mid west, just choose not to deal with that white stuff when I don't have to.  I wouldn't live in CA if I had my choice but my children come first so I am stuck here for now.  Agreed. It could be dangerous for anyone from parched California to move to any state that has so much fresh water that we can take a shower anytime we want!  Yes, we live in a coastal desert. I know this.  I'm not in denial about it.  We get a 1/2" of rain and it's STORM WATCH.  And I agree it would be dangerous, not for the shower part.....I've seen these people drive their cars in the rain......it's not good.  And we have speed limits on most lakes.....because most don't operate boats very safely either.  Quote
Catch 22 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Its certainly non of my business living 2 days away from WI,but I would welcome the chance to get in some excellent cold water c/r. Bass have an excellent survival rate then. Along with others ,I would nix the CDR option as well as live bait or at least require circle hooks for it. When seasons overlap, problems arise ,I know that.  The negative side that I experienced in Pa was when they approved preseason basin,it attracted hoards to the Susquehanna River and was indeed a boon for all who had something to sell.Guide services haunted the area from ice out to June. Overall it was negative thing for me,so I see why so many oppose it. C22 Quote
LunkerFisher Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Is a vote actually happening today, or did I just get my hopes up? Quote
lecisnith Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 It's not a vote it's just a policy meeting. They were setting a deadline of today to hear arguments for all the different regulation change options then they're going to announce the change today. Don't quote me on that, though. Quote
LunkerFisher Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I haven't seen any news from today yet. I'll keep waiting and search again later. Quote
