I've been watching the auction site for a few weeks now and you can consistently get a brand new in the box Daiwa T3 1016 for $150. Gotta be the best $150 dollar reel going right now. I know a lot of people aren't crazy about the original T3 platform but the 1016 is a great reel. if memory serves it was a $350-$400 dollar reel and it got great reviews from Tackle Tour. I missed one today that ended at $129

Just because someone is asking $350-$400 for it...doesn't make it a $400 reel. That said...it sounds like a fair price for a decent Daiwa.

Buying a "$400 reel" for $150 because it's on sale is what the ladies do at Kohls.

I'm basing my comments on the Tackle tour review of this reel, and I can tell you I'm rarely found at Kohls shopping the clearance racks. The original price that "someone" set wasn't some arbitrary number, it was Daiwa's asking price. The 1016 spool alone is in high demand to put into other reels and sold for $70. Full disclosure- I have never used or even handled a 1016 but Tackle warehouse clearanced  them out at $200 so yes I would say its a good deal.

My love hate relationship with the T3 platform continues. Love the casting ability and the 3D braking system. Hate the Zion and geary feel. The hood makes the reel fun to use but annoying at times. I feel the reel should retail at $250-300 due to the amazing casting and brakes but not at $420. For $150ish that's a killer deal IMO.

I sold my T3 1016 because of this love hate relationship. Now even with my new high end reels I've been purchasing I still want another one lol. I think I'm going to get a T3 MX from japan as my next one. It doesn't have the famous 1016 spool but I've read that it has been improved upon on a few of the annoying things associated with the T3 platform. I too have been watching ebay auctions on the 1016 and have passed a few in the $160 range just because I need the cash on two other high end reels. I say go for it if you have the chance. Just understand Zion doesn't feel like Aluminum.

It's Zaion guys. Geez, get it straight! The Mx can be had for about 170 right now. My love hate relationship with the T3 platform is strictly love. I would have never ever paid 400 bucks for one though.

Daiwa is killing me with their Japanese lineup. SS-SV, Alphas Sv, and on and on. I may pop on a 1016 just because at that price it's worth a try. Like you, the Zaion thing would probably annoy the crap out of me. fun stuff to agonize over isn't it?

The SS SV has a Zaion sideplate and dragstar.

Some say it has a cheap plastic feel to it. I bought one tonight. I'll see in about 2 weeks.

Plenty of Daiwa reels out there with plastic side plates that are now legends. How about the old Alphas Ito, clear plastic and that reel still go's for $209 used

That sideplate was also known to crack but that's neither here nor there. The SS SV has a zaion handle sideplate as where most other Daiwas have a metal handle sideplate and then a plastic non handle sideplate. So they feel nice and solid. This reel is said to lack that solid feel due to the zaion and plastic sideplates.

Sounds like a plan. I'll go buy me a new $400.dollar reel and you can go shopping at Kohls with the ladies...lol...JK.

I had a SS SV and didn't even spool it up. It feels like complete hollow plastic. The second I put it in my hand I hated it. The risk of buying from japan without seeing it in person beforehand.

Personally I think the 3D braking system is the best out there.  Only reel I can cast with zero brakes.  However, Longcast setting does apply some brakes, but it is the minimum the reel can be set at.  As already mentioned, it is an excellent casting reel.  I also like the hood, and find myself trying to engage the spool that way with other reels.  It definitely doesn't feel like an older Zillion, but I can live with it considering how good they are for me.  I have 2 of the T3 1016 and one of the older MX reels.. Too bad quality control wasn't that great on these reels.

From what I've read of the SS SV, I don't think it would be a choice of mine, but the new Alphas is definitely in my sights.

Yup I love the 3D as well and cannot wait until Daiwa releases an aluminum or magnesium reel with 3d. The hood makes the reel fun and yes its funny once you grab a different reel you tend to try to close the hood when it's not there lol.

I really shouldn't but I may get another T3 variant.

I must have missed the baitcaster section the last time I was there.  I mean, I even checked the whole "Beyond" section at Bed, Bath & Beyond, and nuthin'.

Not sure you can call a discounted, discontinued reel a leader in a price segment.

Y'all crack me up. I needed a laugh today.

OP...I know what you're saying, but what I'm saying is Daiwa is proud of their stuff. They make good stuff, no doubt...but the asking prices are inflated for what you're getting. Now getting that reel for $150 is much more like it IMO.

The Kohls comment was referring to any girl who just had to buy something because she thinks it's a good deal because it's on sale not taking into account that the MSRP is most likely bloated and she's not really getting a good deal...more or less probably finally paying what a product is worth when it's marked down 80%.

Take the Steez for instance. Theirs no way on God's green earth that a bass reel is really worth $600. Marketing has just buffalo'd the wealthy American enthusiast who has money to burn into thinking that there's a reel built to catch bass that's worth $600.

Long time mountain biker here: you can't tell me that there's more technology and R&D in a $10k road bike than a $3k dual suspension mountain bike. It's not possible. But there are people willing to pay $5,000 just for a set of bicycle wheels.

Sure, they're the best...but nowhere near worth the money.

This is Daiwa, Megabass, etc...to me. Great stuff for sure. No denying it. But they are capitalizing on the hype, the ego, the name brand snobbery that belongs in golf.

I was able to buy a Team Lew's Pro for $150. Was that a good deal? Maybe, but when you put it next to the Team Lite that TW was blowing out for less than $160 early on...I'd say no. One might say "well you got a $300 reel (Pro) for $150...but the other was a $240 reel (Lite) for $160."

Well when you put the two side by side...I'd pay $170 for a Lite all day long over $150 for a Pro because it's a better reel IMO. It casts farther, it's smoother, I feel it performs equally well into the wind, it's lighter, it only lacks aluminum side covers. One isn't worth more because the factory says so...it's worth more because I as the consumer say so.

If people would stop going deep into debt for a Steez, Daiwa would probably produce something of equal performance with a price tag that isn't offensive.

Not bagging on the product at all because it's good stuff, mind you. It's just gotten way out of hand because Joe Schmoe is willing to dip into his kids college fund to keep up with the Jones's.

I always rant about this crap though. You can't tell me that a new pickup is really worth 40k? 50-60k?

I mean...a starter home in NYC is like $380,000...and that would be like one of the worst cities in the world to have to live in, hahaha. $380k?! Gimme a break.

T3 being "worth" $400? Gimme a break.

I did say "sort of" with a question mark in the heading, so that makes it ok

I guess my point was that right now I can't think of a reel priced at $150 that I would buy over the T3. Totally agree that the T3 isn't worth $400 or $300 but that's what they sold for. The Kohls comment hit a little to close to home, we have at least 40 fashion scarfs because they were 70% off ??????? And I have to hide a new reel!!

I got mine for 150. Hell of a pitching reel at that price. Haven't had an issue with it so far.

Daiwa make good products, have good service as their service center is about 6 miles away.  But some of their equipment is way overpriced for sure.  Then when it's marked down to where most of us would consider buying it, we think it's a great deal when there are other reels in that price range that some may feel are better.  A discontinued model is a great buy when it's marked down 60% or more.   But it's marked down to clear inventory for newer models.  Sucks you have to hide your reel purchase from your wife when she has so many great scarfs that she got for a great price.

in fairness I may have as many reels as she has scarfs, and she knows what a good reel costs

Ha!

Shoes here. But she's cool with my crap.

Yes, keep it fair and you usually won't have a problem. Good job!
