ptomacbass Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 what type of wood should i buy if i want it to sink with the minimum ammount of ballast weight? :-/ and how do i do a foil finish? Quote
-ebby- Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 if this is your first one i would just start with some scrap 2x4 that is what i use- no idea what type is the best. As for foiling what do you want to do? foil and then paint over it? or do you want to do a photo finish so there is a picture on there? Quote
ptomacbass Posted August 27, 2008 Author Posted August 27, 2008 i've made other lures from scrapwood and, i want to do a photo with foil. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted August 27, 2008 Super User Posted August 27, 2008 i reccomend you get a thin piece of wood. that will sink with the least amount of ballast. it would take a lot of lead to swimbait made from a 2x4. i reccomend you go to walmart and check out their craft department. at the local walmarts around me, they sell 5"x7"x3/8" piece of basswood for 97 cents a piece. stock up on these and make your lures from them. they dont require much lead to get them to sink. as for photo finishing, heres a great tutorial: http://www.tackleunderground.com/forum/hard-baits/7671-photo-finishing-foil-faux-finishes-tutorial.html good luck and have fun! ptomacbass Posted August 28, 2008 Author Posted August 28, 2008 back when i was in pennsylvania i went to two wal marts and asked if they had wood or small planks and they bith said no. tonight i'm going to the hardware store to pick up a gym locker combo lock so i'll see if they have basswood or maybe even some more scrapwood Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted August 29, 2008 Super User Posted August 29, 2008 Cedar is one of the heavier woods I use. Like Dave ()said, your best wet would be to make a thin profile bait. The more volume the wood has, the more buoyant it is, hence more ballast weight needed. wal marts I love it when people say Wal-mart like this. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted August 29, 2008 Super User Posted August 29, 2008 just go into walmart and and go look at their craft section. personally, i wouldnt trust an employee's knowledge of the inventory of the store. your best wet i love it when people say "bet" like that Quote
