if this is your first one i would just start with some scrap 2x4 that is what i use- no idea what type is the best. As for foiling what do you want to do? foil and then paint over it? or do you want to do a photo finish so there is a picture on there?

i reccomend you get a thin piece of wood. that will sink with the least amount of ballast.

it would take a lot of lead to swimbait made from a 2x4.

i reccomend you go to walmart and check out their craft department. at the local walmarts around me, they sell 5"x7"x3/8" piece of basswood for 97 cents a piece. stock up on these and make your lures from them. they dont require much lead to get them to sink.

as for photo finishing, heres a great tutorial:

good luck and have fun!

back when i was in pennsylvania i went to two wal marts and asked if they had wood or small planks and they bith said no.  tonight i'm going to the hardware store to pick up a gym locker combo lock so i'll see if they have basswood or maybe even some more scrapwood

Cedar is one of the heavier woods I use.  Like Dave ()said, your best wet would be to make a thin profile bait.  The more volume the wood has, the more buoyant it is, hence more ballast weight needed.

I love it when people say Wal-mart like this. ;)

just go into walmart and and go look at their craft section. personally, i wouldnt trust an employee's knowledge of the inventory of the store.

your best wet

i love it when people say "bet" like that  ;)
